FREE ebook: The Bargain by Stephanie Reed

Free for download today from Kregel Publications is The Bargain. Here is the link:

An action-packed conclusion to a great series: "Rebels" by Jill Williamson

about the book...

The remnant of Glenrock has been scattered. But they are not beaten.

The Safe Lands have long kept the true meaning of Liberation secret from their people. But after being sentenced to Liberation themselves, Mason and Omar soon discover the truth.

Levi watched his brothers’ public sentencing and tries to hold out hope they are still alive, He is forced to focus his attention elsewhere, however, when his new wife, Jemma, is captured and made the Safe Lands’ newest Queen. His only choice to save Jemma may be to take up Omar’s old role of undercover vigilante, leading the rebels in their quest to overthrow the government. But will Levi’s new role be enough?

Meanwhile, Jemma’s sister, Shaylinn, is ready to give birth to the “Safe Lands’” children … but not even Ciddah is sure they can be delivered safely in the midst of a rebellion. And Mason must face the fact Omar’s illness could be fatal.

If they can all unite their efforts, together they may be able to expose the Safe Lands’ lies to the people. But if they fail, they will all surely die.

my review...

"Rebels" is an action-packed book that provides a thrilling conclusion to "The Safe Lands" series. Many of the unknown questions that we are left with during the first two books are answered in this final installment, such as what "liberation" truly means and whether it really leads to bliss. Although it had been some time since I'd read the second book in the series, I quickly became absorbed in the characters' lives all over again, as brothers Levi, Omar and Mason must choose if they will take up the mantle of bravery and courage, and lay down their lives for the many. As with the prior novels, I found myself frequently pondering the actions of the people living in the Safe Lands, as there are just so many correlations to our society today, as people increasingly abandon beliefs they see as "outdated" and pursue lives that are all about pleasure. Williams provides a sobering look at what our society could look like if people don't turn back to God.

But what I enjoyed best about this book is that it left me with a feeling of hope, and I found myself smiling as I closed the final pages of this book. Not only this book very well-written, with fantastic characters, lively scenes, and excellent dialogue, but it will leave you thinking about our responsibility to the people around us, who are chasing a future eerily similar to those in the Safe Lands. All in all, I loved this book! Well done Jill Williamson!

I wish I didn't have to leave the world of the Safe Lands already, because I have so enjoyed this series. I give this book a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars, and highly recommend the entire series.

Spirit-filled fiction at its best: "The Turning" by Davis Bunn

I knew I was in for it when I was fighting a rise of emotion by page 30, and by page 66 had full on tears streaming down my face...

Read on for my full review of Davis Bunn's latest!

18527871

TAKE THE TURNING
AND WALK THE UNLIKELY ROAD

John. Alisha. Jenny. Yussef. Ruth. 5 people from completely different walks of life, inexplicably drawn together by the hand of God. Though unsure what they even have in common, they quickly begin to realize that they have heard the voice of God, and that he has called them to seemingly impossible tasks. As their lives intersect, they realize God has prepared them to join together in warring against the cultural message that people's lives no longer have purpose but are devoid of hope. The message is carried on the waves of greed and lust for power, and God has called them to stand in the void in the face of the swelling darkness. Will they obey, no matter the cost? And are they truly hearing God's voice?

I knew I was in for it when I was fighting a rise of emotion by page 30, and by page 66 had full on tears streaming down my face. It has been a long time since I have sensed the Holy Spirit speaking to me in power through a fiction novel. "The Turning" is one such book, where the actions of the characters swept me up into the beauty of the scene, and I realized anew why God is so very amazing, bringing life where there seems to be no hope. Bunn's latest book truly does fly in the face of the pervading message of our culture today, one that has our young abandoning any sense of hope and instead drowning their despair in all manner of addictions. And yet Bunn's call to carry a message of God's hope does not at all come across in a preachy way, but rather has been woven seemlessly into the fabric of the plot. The scenes are powerfully written, with characters so real I was tempted to pray for them! The plot races along, building to the powerful conclusion and an ending that came far too soon because I enjoyed the book so much.

I can honestly say that "The Turning" is one of the most thought-provoking, spirit-filled fiction books I have read so far this year. This is one you don't want to miss! 5 out of 5 stars.

Yet another amazing book from Charles Martin: "A Life Intercepted" @centerstreet

A Life Intercepted

about the book....

Twelve years ago Matthew "the Rocket" Rising had it all. Married to his high school sweetheart and one of the winningest quarterbacks in the history of college football, he was the number one NFL draft pick. But on the night of the draft, he plummeted from the pinnacle of esteem. Falsely accused of a heinous crime with irrefutable evidence, it seemed in an instant all was lost--his reputation, his career, his freedom, and most devastatingly, the love of his life.

Having served his sentence and never played a down of professional football, Matthew leaves prison with one goal--to find his wife, Audrey, whom no one has seen since the trial. He returns to an unwelcoming reception from his Gardi, Georgia, hometown to learn that Audrey has taken shelter from the media with the nuns at a Catholic school. There she has discovered a young man with the talent to achieve the football career Matthew should have had. All he needs is the right coach. Although helping the boy means Matthew violates the conditions of his release and--if discovered--reincarceration for life, he'll take the chance with hope of winning back Audrey's love.

my review....

Charles Martin's writing career seems unstoppable. Every book that comes out makes me think "this is his best yet!" and his latest is certainly no exception. In fact, I honestly wish I hadn't read "A Life Intercepted"...because then I would be able to read it all over again as if experiencing it for the first time! It is simply THAT good. Within a few pages of charging into the story, I found myself living and walking alongside the characters, feeling an ominous sort of tension building as I waited to find out exactly how things ended up going off course for Matthew. And, although I don't always enjoy it when authors switch back and forth between present time and past events, Charles Martin did so in a seamless manner, drawing me into the story. Fans of Christian-themed fiction will notice that the book is not written with an overert gospel message, but the book simply breathes with grace, celebrating selfless sacrifice and the beautiful gift of forgiveness. The writing is powerful, tapping deep into our emotions and exploring what it means to be human, to make mistakes, to rise above our circumstances. If you are anything like me, expect to get emotional! Nearer to the end of the book, I suddenly realized that I had tears silently streaming down my face.

To those who are not football fanatics, don't let the football theme deter you from reading from this book. While Martin's love for the game shines through the pages, the story is not so much about a football star as it is about a boy growing into a man, who must lay his own self down for those he loves. The story may not move along at a pace that a suspense novel does, but there is still one twist and turn after another that will keep you running through the pages. This is my favourite book that he's written yet, and I can't wait to see what will next emerge from his fertile imagination!

Readers looking for a fantastically written, moving read should pick up a copy for themselves. You will be glad you did! I highly recommend "A Life Intercepted" and award it 5 out of 5 stars.

Start your children on the journey to truth early! My review of the "Adventure Bible for Toddlers"

Aimed at children ages 2-5, the "Adventure Bible for Toddlers" offers up ten different Bible stories from both the Old and the New Testament. Beginning with the Creation story, the Bible then moves through the stories of Noah's Ark, Moses, David and Goliath, Daniel, and Jonah, before then concluding with four stories about Jesus. The stories are written in simple, straightforward language that toddlers will be able to easily understand.

My children are the foremost authority on children's products of course, and they have informed me that their favourite part of this book is the colourful, action packed pictures. I have to agree that the illustrations are an absolutely wonderful accompaniment to these stories which my children love to hear so often! Our family's favourite drawing is the one of the angel standing between two lions in the story of Daniel - it is absolutely beautiful. The stories themselves are short, each covering four pages of this sturdy board book, perfect for capturing a toddler's short attention span. I really like that those children hungering for more detail will be able to use the included reference to look up the application Bible passage with their parents. Parents who are just starting to introduce regular Bible reading times with their children will be well-suited to use "the Adventure Bible for Toddlers", using these simple stories to ignite their children's interest in spiritual things. Most of all, their children will learn the important truth that God loves them deeply!

I strongly recommend this Bible for toddlers, and award it 4 out of 5 stars.

Naked I come, Naked I go

Today I was reminded of how silly it is to be caught up in the lust for more things.

Honestly, I am often like a two-year-old with my insatiable desire for the new and shiny.

New car? Ooh, wish I had that

New computer?
New camera?
New clothes?
New books?
New house?

I want it all. And more.

And then I hear the voice of God whispering to me:

"Chase me, not these things!"

How is it possible that I so quickly forget that I can't take anything with me when I die? How can I forget the truth from God's word, that we arrive in this world naked, and we leave it just as naked? Why don't I chase after the things that matter

Love well
Give generously
Show people the face of Christ

Won't you join me today, and focus on what really matters?

After all, when you die everything you have is gone, blown away in the wind...

Matthew 6:19-21

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Introducing: Hidden in the Stars by Robin Caroll

Introducing "Hidden in the Stars" by Robin Caroll! Read on to learn more about her latest book...

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Hidden in the Stars
Abingdon Press (September 16, 2014)
by
Robin Caroll

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Born and raised in Louisiana, Robin Caroll is a southerner through and through. Her passion has always been to tell stories to entertain others. Robin’s mother, bless her heart, is a genealogist who instilled in Robin the deep love of family and pride of heritage—two aspects Robin weaves into each of her books.

When she isn’t writing, Robin spends time with her husband of twenty-plus years, her 3 beautiful daughters, 2 precious grandsons, and their character-filled pets at home—in the South, where else?

ABOUT THE BOOK

Following an attack that killed her mother and stole her ability to speak, 21-year-old Sophia Montgomery has no choice but to accept her estranged grandmother’s offer to return to their family home. Although detective Julian Frazier is working hard on the case, Sophia unknowingly frustrates him because her inability to speak thwarts her eyewitness evidence. The fact that Julian is undeniably attracted to Sophia doesn’t help either, so Julian hides his feelings as concern for a trauma victim and focuses instead on finding the killer.

Little do they know, the clues to solving the case may be right in front of them, displayed in Sophia’s mother’s “special” quilt design. Who will realize the secret Sophia’s unwittingly been hiding in plain sight? When the truth comes to light, will Sophia find her voice again? Or will the murderer—still at large—silence her forever?

My review....

Diane Noble has written a fun, light-hearted mystery that will keep you turning the pages as you race to find out whodunit!  I love it when authors make the heroes of the story a little bit different than in your "usual" mystery (if there is such a thing!), and this story certainly fits the bill with the older more mature character of El Littlefield. I immediately felt empathy with her as she seeks to establish her catering business and provide for her future, and I could easily imagine her horror as a room full of important people fall ill right after eating her catered meal! The romance that sparks between El and Max certainly makes for some humorous and tenderhearted moments, and El's best friend Hyacinth is quite the larger-than-life character indeed. I was most intrigued by the idea of a figurehead that held the secret to the location of hidden artifacts and jewelry rescued during World War II, and I am looking forward to how that plot continues to unfold in future novels. Will Max and El uncover the location in the next novel? What danger awaits them as they chase after this treasure? Whatever it looks like, it should be one entertaining ride! The one thing I didn't love about the novel was the way it portrayed police officers as somewhat inept and untrustworthy - but I am sure not everyone will share my same opinion. In all, this is a worthwhile read for someone looking for a book that will keep them engaged from start to finish with an entertaining plot and lots of funny moments.

I award this book a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars, and am anticipating what is next in store for El and Max in the second installment of the "Professor and Mrs. Littefield" mysteries!

Overwhelmed by God's Glory

The combined effect of blasts from two solar storms this week 'should light up the skies pretty good over Canada,' says William Murtagh of the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.

When I see the glory of creation, how can I not believe in God? How can I not be overwhelmed by his beauty, his majesty, by the works of his hands that proclaim his power? The above photo is taken yesterday (published by CBC news), and displays the northern lights that blessed Canada due to solar plasma hitting our atmosphere. Amazing, isn't it?

I look at that photo, and I am in awe of the way God blesses us every day if we just open our eyes to see his handiwork. Romans 1:20 states "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse." God, you are truly amazing! I praise you for your amazing beauty, your incomparably great power! Open my eyes to see YOU everywhere I look.

By now, I am guessing that you have heard the song "Overwhelmed" by Big Daddy Weave, but if you haven't, turn out the lights, close your eyes, and listen to the lyrics of this song:

I see the work of Your Hands
Galaxies spin in a Heavenly dance oh God
All that You are is so overwhelming

I hear the sound of Your Voice
All at once it's a gentle and thundering noise oh God
All that You are is so overwhelming

I delight myself in You
Captivated by Your beauty
I'm overwhelmed, I'm overwhelmed by You

God, I run into Your arms
Unashamed because of mercy
I'm overwhelmed, I'm overwhelmed by You

I know the power of Your Cross
Forgiven and free forever You'll be my God
All that You've done is so overwhelming

I delight myself in You
In the Glory of Your Presence
I'm overwhelmed, I'm overwhelmed by You

God, I run into Your arms
Unashamed because of mercy
I'm overwhelmed, I'm overwhelmed by You

You are Beautiful, You are Beautiful
Oh God, there is no one more Beautiful
You are Beautiful, God you are the most Beautiful

You are Wonderful, You are Wonderful
Oh God, there is no one more Wonderful
You are Wonderful, God You are the most Wonderful

You are Glorious, You are Glorious
Oh God, there is no one more Glorious
You are Glorious, God you are the most Glorious

And now for the review:

Parenting expert and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Kevin Leman says it is, and he's ready to show you exactly how you can make it happen in your family--in just five days. He shows families how to

· prioritize the right things
· maintain great attitudes and behaviors

· make family time count

As always, Dr. Leman's outstanding advice is laced with humor, great stories, and the wisdom that comes from a lifetime of experience.

If you've had it up to here with bickering, hurt feelings, and emotional exhaustion, Have a Happy Family by Friday is just what the doctor ordered.

my review....

I have long appreciated the books penned by Dr. Kevin Leman, and "Have a Happy Family by Friday" is no exception! Dr. Leman is unafraid to tackle the hardest of subjects, and he does so with truth, godly wisdom, and a dash of humor thrown in as well. The book is easy to read, either in one sitting or one chapter at a time, and there is simply no excuse for any parent to say "well I just don't have time to read another parenting book!". The best part of the book is that it is just so very practical, with numerous real-life stories and situations woven throughout the chapters that provide situations parents will truly be able to relate to. No parent wants their family to feel like a war zone, with constant disrespect or bickering (whether between the parents or the children!). This book will give you some useful tools and strategies to implement with your own family, providing your children with a firm hand while still allowing their voice to be heard. One of my main takeaways from this book is a reminder of the importance of communication, whether between parents in the context of the marriage, between children who need to learn to "fight" in a respectful manner, or between the parents and children trying to navigate the different stages of the growing-up years.  I also loved the "bonus" section dealing with birth order and the difference it makes to be a first born versus the middle child or the youngest in the family. That kind of information will help parents understand their children (and perhaps themselves too) with much more clarity. The "Ask Dr. Leman" section that looks at a wide variety of issues he has been questioned about over the years (everything from permissive parents to controlling dads, or how to deal with bickering siblings or grades that are slipping) is also incredibly informative.

"Have a Happy Family by Friday" is one of those books that I will be reading again...and again...and again. I highly recommend this helpful resource and award it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Full of literary gems: "A Light in the Wilderness" by Jane Kirkpatrick

Cover Art

about the book....

Three very different women. One dangerous journey. And a future that seems just out of reach.
Letitia holds nothing more dear than the papers that prove she is no longer a slave. They may not cause most white folks to treat her like a human being, but at least they show she is free. She trusts in those words she cannot read--as she is beginning to trust in Davey Carson, an Irish immigrant cattleman who wants her to come west with him.

Nancy Hawkins is loathe to leave her settled life for the treacherous journey by wagon train, but she is so deeply in love with her husband and she knows she will follow him anywhere--even when the trek exacts a terrible cost.

Betsy is a Kalapuya Indian, the last remnant of a once proud tribe in the Willamette Valley in Oregon territory. She spends her time trying to impart the wisdom and ways of her people to her grandson. But she will soon have another person to care for.

As season turns to season, suspicion turns to friendship, and fear turns to courage, three spirited women will discover what it means to be truly free in a land that makes promises it cannot fulfill. This multilayered story from bestselling author Jane Kirkpatrick will grip your heart and mind as you travel on the dusty and dangerous Oregon Trail into the boundless American West. Based on a true story.

my review....

Jane Kirkpatrick's latest novel soars on the wings of her beautiful prose, showcasing her wonderful command of the English language. Not only was the story interesting to read (especially knowing it is based on a true story!), but it is simply a pleasure to be introduced to each carefully chosen word. Being a historical, character-driven novel, the book is obviously written at a slower pace than the suspense novels I normally gravitate to most often. However, I couldn't help but appreciate the way Kirkpatrick delves deep into the human nature through the characters of Letitia, Nancy and Betsy. My favourite character was Letitia, a woman who refuses to stay trapped in the horror of her past as a slave, but instead courageously takes steps to become the talented, strong woman God has made her to be. I admire her all the more knowing that she does not just exist in the fertile imagination of an author, though Kirkpatrick has done a wonderful job at fleshing out the person she may have been. But knowing that an African-American woman ventured forth into Oregon even with its "exclusion" laws that prohibited a black person from living there, is amazing indeed! Letitia shows a remarkable strength of character to take the path she did. The last few chapters were especially gripping as the heartbreak in the story intensified all the more, and I finished the story feeling triumphant on her behalf. Overall, I can say that all of the characters are absolutely compelling, and the story is full of literary gems and amazing truths that I will take away from the story to savour and ponder for a long-time to come.

Those readers who have enjoyed Kirkpatrick's prior books will surely appreciate her latest offering, and I am sure she will be gaining new fans as well! I give this book a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
