Another winner from McCourtney: "Death Takes a Ride"

Cover Art

about the book....

It's official. This case is above her pay grade--and Cate's in over her head.

Cate Kinkaid arrives at H&B Vintage Auto Restorations to give a friend a ride. But, as usual, trouble finds Cate even there--this time in the form of one dead man, one wounded man, and what appears to be a pretty obvious case of self-defense.

Despite having been merely an unfortunate bystander, Cate finds herself sucked into the case. And the deeper she gets, the more she begins to suspect that the shooting in the H&B office may not have been as cut-and-dried as it appeared!

my review....

The final book in the "Cate Kincaid" series provides a fun ride from beginning to end. I enjoyed the first two books in the series, and this final installment certainly doesn't disappoint. From the quirky, entertaining characters to the mysterious plot line, I was kept glued to the pages. Cate continues to be a fascinating character to follow along with on her exploits, as she isn't some polished expert sleuth, but rather seems to find herself in the middle of trouble without any effort on her part!  The relationship that has developed from the beginning with the ever helpful Mitch has provided many moments of hilarity, and I loved the scene in this book that takes place in the bar (you will see what I mean as you dive into this story yourself). The ending of the book is truly a unique one, and if you can read it without at least cracking a smile (if not outright laughing) then I would be shocked. McCourtney continues to provide a nice blend of wonderful characterization with well paced plots. I just know that readers who enjoy light-hearted mysteries that are clean and that celebrate love and faith, with a good mixture of humour thrown in, will greatly enjoy this book.

I do wish that there were more than 3 books in this series, because I would love to see what else lies in store for Cate! "Death Takes A Ride" will leave you with a smile on your face, and I strongly recommend not only this book but indeed the whole series. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Have your hanky handy: My movie review of "When the Game Stands Tall"

If you don't have plans tonight, then I highly recommend you go see the movie "When the Game Stands Tall"! Read on for my review.

About the film:

Inspired by a true story, When The Game Stands Tall brings to life the incredible winning streak of the De La Salle High School football team: 151 straight victories over 12 years. All along the way, as Coach Bob Ladouceur (Jim Caviezel) builds his seemingly invincible national powerhouse, he has emphasized purpose and significance rather than streaks and titles. When the streak is broken, and tragedy strikes the team, Coach Ladouceur must teach his players – and the entire town – that it’s not about how you fall, but how you get back up.

 My review:

I am one of those unusual males who does not thrive on watching hours of sports on television - I'd rather read a book! Yet give me the chance to watch a sports-inspired movie and I will jump at the opportunity. The reason? Such films are totally inspiring, and "When the Game Stands" is one of the best sports films to come along in awhile! This is a movie that your whole family can enjoy without worrying about offensive material. The acting is solid, with great performances by a number of talented actors, and I was completely drawn into the storyline. I found myself mesmerized by the action on the screen, to the point that I was gripping my arm rests to see how the football games would play out!

Prior to this film, I had never heard of the De La Salle High School football team or their amazing victory streak. But I can certainly appreciate why this story was brought to the big screen. Not only is the film entertaining, but there were a number of moments where I wanted to pause the movie and go back and listen to the movie lines again because of the profound wisdom being shared. I loved watching Coach Ladouceur speak real life into the kids, fearlessly showing them what real faith looks like, and teaching them that the game, and life, is not about winning and about doing for yourself, but for coming alongside others and being true family to those around you. There were many times that I had tears in my eyes (and my wife was full-on crying), so I will warn you that be prepared to get emotional!

"When the Game Stands Tall" is a movie that I will be watching again and again, not only for the pure enjoyment of an entertaining film, but because it reminds me of what really matters in life - love, sacrifice, faith, and living for others.
My thanks to Graf-Martin for providing the opportunity to review this film.

Movie review and GIVEAWAY: "The BoxCar Children"

Check out my review of "The BoxCar Children"

AND

be sure to enter the giveaway at the end!

about the movie....

Four orphaned and homeless siblings happen upon an abandoned boxcar, which with a little creativity and hard work, they gradually furnish with all the comforts of home. Fearful that they will be sent to live with the reputedly cruel grandfather they have never met, the children keep their new home a secret - until a serious illness forces them to reveal themselves in order to save young Violet.

About the Cast

Featuring an all-star cast of voice actors, including Academy Award Nominee Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now), J.K. Simmons (Spiderman), Zach Gordon (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Joey King (Fargo), Mackenzie Foy (Twilight series), and Jadon Sand (LEGO: The Movie), this is the very first full-length, animated feature adaptation of Gertrude Chandler Warner's best-selling classic!

my review....

The story of "The Boxcar Children" is one that has captured many generations since 1942, and I was so excited to see that the book has been made into a movie! The story is a heart-warming one, and the movie makers have done a solid job at adapting the story into this animated tale. The visuals are bright and colourful, and while it wouldn't be fair to compare this DVD to a high-budget Disney film, I enjoyed watching the story play across the screen. The voices of the characters have also been well-matched and were in line with what I imagined they would sound like. The film moves along at a good pace, and I found that my children's attention was engaged from start to finish. Most importantly, with all of the questionable media material out there, parents can rest easy knowing that their children will be wonderfully entertained watching this movie, and learn some important lessons along the way. I particularly love that in this story the children serve as excellent examples to viewers, and there is plenty of suspense without the gratuitous violence so common in many movies. The ending will leave you with a nostalgic feeling, and the best part is that if your children haven't yet read this series of books, they are sure to be hooked! The first Boxcar Children book may jumpstart them into the whole series - who knew movies could play such a great role in getting your children interested in reading?

I strongly recommend "The BoxCar Children" for you to watch along with your children - it's perfect for a family movie night! 4 out of 5 stars.

A triumphant ending to a stellar series: "The Revealing" by Suzanne Woods Fisher @suzannewfisher

Cover Art

about the book....

Love does extraordinary things to people . . .

In a single, impulsive act, Naomi King chooses to follow her heart into unfamiliar territory, jeopardizing all that she holds dear. If anyone finds out what she's up to, she's in for trouble. But when it comes to Tobe Schrock, Naomi believes it's worth it.

But it all comes crashing down when a young woman arrives at the Inn at Eagle Hill with an unexpected delivery for Tobe. Add a guest at the inn with a curious talent and a genealogist who is more interested in modern-day Schrocks than in old family trees, and evidence starts to mount that points to something sinister at work. Or someone.

my review....

Suzanne Woods Fisher excels at keeping her readers on their toes, and "The Revealing" is no exception, as it is filled with twists and turns that kept me glued to the pages! This book brings things full circle, as we learn more about Tobe and his past choices and about his father's death, and we watch the different characters grow in profound ways as they face down trials. The most amazing change occurs in Naomi, who starts off the series as somewhat of a mousy character, and yet by the end of this book is quite the strong woman indeed! I must admit that I love seeing those types of transformations, and Fisher does it in a natural and believable manner. All of the characters seem to live and breathe with life, and I so enjoyed getting to know them over these three books. I'm sure it sounds as if I feel these characters are real...and in some ways it does feel that way! My only complaint is that things are left somewhat hanging with Jimmy, a character I have admired since his appearance in the Stoney Ridge series. All I can say is that there had better be another appearance from Jimmy in a future Fisher book (hint, hint). But for many of the other characters, things resolve in a highly pleasing manner, as they experience a chance at love and at new beginnings, discovering how to become the wonderful people God has created them to be. I walk away from this novel having enjoyed the deep, godly wisdom that permeates the book, calling us to love the unloveable, to give of ourselves in a selfless manner, reminding us that "Love...does extraordinary things to people". The world would be a better place if we all loved with the kind of love we are shown in this book!

"The Inn at Eagle Hill" series has been given a permanent place on my shelf, because I plan to read these books again and again over the coming years. I thoroughly enjoyed "The Revealing" and award it 5 out of 5 stars.

Giggles will abound with "God Shows the Way" (Berenstain Bears)

The latest three-book collection from the popular Berenstain Bears Living Lights™ series features the cubs at their finest! Written in level one of the "I Can Read" standards, the book includes the titles "Faith Gets Us Through", "Have No Fear, God Is Near", and also "Piggy Bank Blessings". In Faith Gets Us Through, the cubs are ready to earn their Cave Adventure Merit Badges, and with Papa's fearless (but misdirected) leadership, adventure abounds as they make their way through a cave! In "Have no Fear, God is Near", Sister Bear struggles to remember to trust God whenever something spooky startles her. The third book, "Piggy Bank Blessings" finds the cubs learning to save up their money for something special - and Mama finds herself learning something about her cubs as well!

All three of these stories will capture the attention of your children, with their bright and vivid drawings and their engaging plots. Our family favourite is definitely "Faith Gets Us Through", as Papa is just so certain that he knows EVERYTHING about caves...and then they all find themselves in quite the humorous situations, one after another! This collection of stories will not only entertain your young readers, but they will impart valuable lessons along the way...without the readers even realizing it! I love the Bible verses included with the books, ones that little minds can grasp onto. My children were able to easily understand the truths contained in the pages of the story, especially the one about not being afraid because God is always by our side. That is a truth that adults need to learn along with children! Developing readers will appreciate the simple language these stories are written in, while being challenged to increase their skills as well. All in all, "God Shows the Way" is a wonderful addition to your home library, and one sure to please parents and children alike.

I, and my children, give this book a solid rating and award it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

A review copy was received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I was in no way compensated for this review.

The perfect summer mystery book: "Murder at the Mikado" by Julianna Deering

Cover Art

about the book....

When a celebrated ACTOR IS FOUND MURDERED IN HIS DRESSING ROOM, all signs point to Drew's old flame. But behind the curtains nothing is what it seems and this quickly becomes hisMOST puzzling case YET.
Just as Drew Farthering thinks his life has calmed down some, Fleur Landis, a former girlfriend, reappears, in dire need of his help. She's married now, no longer an actress--but the lead actor in her former troupe's production of The Mikado has been murdered, and Fleur is the police's number one suspect.

Drew would rather focus on his fiancée, Madeline Parker, and their upcoming wedding, but he can't leave Fleur and her family in the lurch--even if she did break his heart once. As Drew, Nick, and Madeline begin investigating, they discover more going on behind the scenes of the theater troupe than could ever have been imagined. It seems nearly everyone had a motive, and alibis are few and far between.

Both the murder case and the presence of the beautiful, exotic Fleur put a heavy strain on Drew and Madeline's relationship. Will their still-young romance survive the pressure?

my review....

I absolutely adore those murder mysteries that you can sink your teeth into, those ones that bring to mind the wonderful works of Agatha Christie, and so I have been very pleased with each book from Deering's talented pen. "Murder at the Mikado" is the third installment in the "Drew Farthering Mystery" series - and it had better not be the last because I just couldn't get enough! Drew and his fiancée Madeline end up back in the thick of a mysterious plot, with dead bodies piling up and questions multiplying rapidly. Add in the threat from former flames, right when you are planning a wedding, and you have all you need for a dramatic, absorbing read! This book reveals a deeper look into both Drew and Madeline as readers are given a better glimpse into their past and realize that both have made mistakes and struggle with past choices and experiences. I appreciate how Deering can take a mystery like this and yet naturally weave in elements of faith with themes of forgiveness and trust in God's leading. The mystery itself kept me on my toes from start to end, with lots of false trails thrown in along the way, something I always enjoy. The end of the book provides for some wonderful closure on one level, but leaves things wide open for a fourth book that would see the return of Drew and Madeline pursuing a mystery utterly important to Drew's past and future. Let's hope that book four is in the works, because I could happily dedicate an entire shelf of my library to the future antics of Drew Farthering!

If you enjoy a good mystery then plan on spending some time with Drew and Madeline this summer. You will be glad you did!

About the book...

Written by an L. A. County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator.

Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity.

A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Intriguing historical plot: "With Every Breath" by Elizabeth Camden

Cover Art

about the book....

In the shadow of the nation's capital, Kate Livingston's respectable life as a government worker is disrupted by an encounter with the insufferable Trevor McDonough, the one man she'd hoped never to see again. A Harvard-trained physician, Trevor never showed the tiniest flicker of interest in Kate, and business is the only reason he has sought her out now.

Despite her misgivings, Kate agrees to Trevor's risky proposal to join him in his work to find a cure for tuberculosis. As Kate begins to unlock the mysteries of Trevor's past, his hidden depths fascinate her. However, a shadowy enemy lies in wait and Trevor's closely guarded secrets are darker than she ever suspected.

As revelations from the past threaten to destroy their careers, their dreams, and even their lives, Trevor and Kate find themselves in a painfully impossible situation. With everything to lose, they must find the strength to trust that hope and love can prevail over all.

my review....

Elizabeth Camden excels at creating the most intriguing of historical plots, and "With Every Breath" is no exception! The focus on Trevor's search for a cure for Tuberculosis not only gave me a greater understanding of this disease as it lurked in the past, but made me completely thankful I live in an era of modern medicine! I can't imagine contracting a disease that would leave me utterly terrified that I was going to pass it on to my children with my very breath. This aspect of the story line is truly fascinating and left me with a great appreciation for those who gave their lives to battle this disease. Despite such a serious subject matter, Trevor and Kate's developing relationship made for a nice balance to the story, providing many hilarious moments in the midst of the medical drama. Although this isn't one of those books necessarily seeking to have reader's laugh out loud, their interactions are a hoot (and some of Trevor's "compliments" to Kate left a big grin on my face). The mystery surrounding Trevor's past was also interesting and I enjoyed watching the plot unfold. But what I most loved in this story is the author's ability to look at the issue of loss and suffering and the human tendency to live in fear and so lose out on what God may have in store for us. Kate's determination to control her future so she doesn't have to experience such loss again is something we all battle with - and as the end of the novel approached, I felt absolutely triumphant along side of her!

I highly recommend this book, and dare anyone to pick up a copy and not enjoy themselves! 4.5 out of 5 stars.

A foretaste of heaven! Police, birds and ground squirrels

Recently my family and I went to Manning Park to go on a hiking trip. The view was FANTASTIC and God's handiwork was greatly enjoyed:

The trip even started off with an amazing bonus - I got pulled over by the police for not displaying my insurance sticker on my license plate. Fortunately, I didn't get a ticket, and my son was super pumped to have seen a POLICE officer! (I, however, wasn't QUITE as excited).

And then, at the parking lot way up on the mountain we found the most amazingly tame animals. My wife is a bit of a (insert animal or reptile name) whisperer and the birds came and landed on her hand.

My son had a nice chat with a ground squirrel, who peered up at him wanting to know when he would be fed. (My son looks at me much the same way so they had much in common!)

All in all, a great day, and one that made me long for the wonder of heaven, when the lion will lie down with the lamb, and our days will be spent worshiping God and enjoying a new heaven and new earth.

Come Lord Jesus!

Absolutely compelling! My review of "The Confession" by Robert Whitlow @HCCFaith

The Confession, Robert Whitlow

Holt Douglas loves nothing more than using his job as a prosecutor to bring criminals to justice, especially when many of his cases are based on a confession the criminal has made. His interesting job and his relationship with the beautiful Angelina have caused him to almost forget the dark secrets lurking in his own past. But when he stumbles upon a file about the suspicious death of the town's wealthiest businessmen, Holt's decision to re-open the cold case has far reaching consequences he couldn't have expected. As Holt and deputy sheriff Trish Carmichael hunt down the truth of the man's death, Holt comes face to face with the guilt from his past. He must decide whether to confess his own actions, while racing to prove a crime that others are determined to keep covered at all costs.

"The Confession" strikes a wonderful balance between being a character-driven plot with one that is chock full of action and drama that keeps the pages turning. I absolutely loved meeting the characters in this novel, and Trish in particular reminded me of a character from my favourite series from Whitlow, the "Tides of Truth" series. I think what I love most about these characters is that they certainly aren't perfect, that from the Christian to the non-Christian, all struggle with sins of various kinds. Yet Whitlow provides a beautiful and clear presentation of how to confess our sins and put our trust in Jesus, in an absolutely natural way that adds to the story Whitlow celebrates the wonder of bringing past sins to light and finding freedom in the arms of Jesus and in confession to people God has placed in our lives for just such a purpose. It becomes clear from reading the novel that holding onto past secrets about our errors simply traps us in emotional pain and stops us from becoming who God has designed us to be. The best part is that although Whitlow deals with such a serious subject matter as this, the story is completely entertaining and I simply couldn't put it down! The legal scenes clearly reflect Whitlow's own experience as a lawyer, while the mystery surrounding the businessman's death made for absorbing reading.

All in all, this latest book from Robert Whitlow celebrates all I've come to enjoy in his novels - great characters, a plot threaded with legal elements, and a few surprises thrown in along the way. I highly recommended this compelling book, and I plan to read it again! 5 out of 5 stars.
