A thrilling sequel: "Nowhere to Hide" by Sigmund Brouwer

Nowhere to Hide

about the book....

William King and Blake Watt have just settled into their senior year of high school when they receive a call for help—the authorities need to use their computer skills to track down a father who has failed to make child-support payments. The invitation to become cyber bounty hunters is so tempting, they don’t stop to ask why they were chosen for this assignment.

As they learn more about the man they are searching for, they discover the true nature of their mission—to help the founder of a Seattle-based software company prove that he is innocent of a much different charge. But the scariest things they learn are why they were chosen and why they were supposed to remain in the background.

my review....

I wish they'd had young adult fiction books like THIS when I was a teen! "Nowhere to Hide" is a fantastic follow-up to the first book starring teens King, MJ, and Blake, Dead Man's Switch, and has the same non-stop action as the first book. I was riveted to my seat as I was drawn back into their world and into the middle of a conspiracy where nothing is as it seems. The characters are expertly developed, and readers will find themselves cheering on the 3 teens as they race to discover exactly what is going on. Something I really appreciated about this novel especially is that King has some serious challenges to overcome, and he shows that we don't have to pretend to be perfect (and in fact that doing so can actually only make things worse!) I also like the special bond King has with his parents, and think that if more parents had the openness King ends up having with his mom and dad that there would be a lot less problems in this world. I encourage parents to read this book along with their teenagers, because not only will they be completely entertained, but they will have the opportunity to talk about when it is okay to lie or not lie. The author even brings up some examples from the Bible that fit well into the story and can also lead to some further discussion.

Both teens and adults who love an action-packed plot with tons of twist and turns should plan on adding "Nowhere to Hide" to their collection. Not only will they find themselves immersed in a well-told story, but they will appreciate how this novel celebrates family, faith, and friendships.

"Nowhere to Hide" is young adult fiction at its best. 5 out of 5 stars.

A word from the author:
I write historical fiction because I love adventure in far-off times and places. I’ve traveled since I was a teenager—backpacking through Germany and Eastern Europe, studying German in Salzburg, eating gelato in Italy, and riding camels in Morocco were some of the highlights. Travel kindles my imagination, fuels my love of history, and introduces me to one-of-a-kind characters. It’s the best kind of research.

When I can’t travel, I read. I love fiction, of course, but I’m often found behind a stack of history books or searching the web for historical tidbits. How people lived together, worked, and what they ate (I love food!) is usually what catches my imagination. No matter where or when we live, people are more alike than they are different. I love to find the similarities between our lives and those of the men and women of the ancient world.

I make my home in Minnesota with my husband of 22 years, four children, three fat cats, and a tortoise named Moe. When I’m not writing Biblical fiction, I’m feeding the ravenous horde of kids and their friends, volunteering at church and school, battling dandelions, and dreaming about my next adventure – whether it be in person or on the page.

In this captivating retelling of a classic biblical story, Jesus shocks the town of Bethany with Lazarus’s resurrection from the dead, leading Martha—a seemingly perfect woman trapped by the secrets of her past—to hope and a new life.

Everyone in Bethany admires Martha—the perfect Jewish woman. She feeds and clothes her loved ones, looks after the family farm, and meticulously follows every precept of the Pharisees’ strict laws. But Martha is hiding a secret. At her sister’s marriage feast, she gave her heart and her innocence to a young musician who promised to return and marry her, but instead betrayed her love and abandoned her.

Seven years later, only two people in Bethany know of Martha’s secret sin: her brother, Lazarus, and Simon, the righteous Pharisee to whom Martha is betrothed. When Lazarus falls ill, Martha is faced with a choice: send for Jesus to save her dying brother—risking the wrath of Simon who threatens to betray her—or deny Jesus’ healing power and remain trapped in her tomb of secrecy and lies.

Meanwhile, on the shores of Galilee, Isa roams the wilderness, tortured by demons and knowing only that someone is waiting for him. When he is healed by Jesus, he finds that seven years have passed since his descent into madness. Isa journeys home to Bethany only to find he is too late to win back Martha’s love.

When Martha risks all to heal Lazarus, will Jesus arrive in time, or will he—like Isa—come too late?

Packs a powerful punch! "Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe" by Max Lucado

about the book...

What if you could ask God anything? What would you ask? And how would he answer?

Chelsea Chambers is on her own. After a public split from her NFL superstar husband, Chelsea takes a bold step out of the limelight and behind the counter of the Higher Grounds Cafe, an old-fashioned coffee shop in dire need of reinvention. But when her courage, expert planning, and out-of-this-world cupcakes fail to pay the bills, this newly single mom finds herself desperate for help. Better yet, a miracle.

Then a curious stranger lands at Chelsea's door, and with him, an even more curious string of events. Soon, customers are flocking to the Higher Grounds Cafe, and not just for the cupcakes and cappuccino. They've come for the internet connection to the divine. Now the cafe has become the go-to place for people in search of answers to life's biggest questions.

When a catastrophe strikes and her ex comes calling, Chelsea begins to wonder if the whole universe is conspiring against her quest to make it on her own. After a shocking discovery opens her eyes to the unseen world around her, Chelsea finds the courage to ask, and heaven answers in a most unexpected way."

my review...

At just under 200 pages, "Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe" is an easy-to-read novel that packs a powerful punch! I quite enjoyed delving into this character-driven novel that serves to remind us that God is always with us, and that there is a whole other realm operating around us. The angelic character of Manny was especially full of surprises (who knew that Angels would love Star Wars?) and I enjoyed this glimpse into what may be. People looking for a novel with characters they can relate to will resonate with some of the insecurities and fears Chelsea and her husband Sawyer deal with, along with difficulties forgiving what seems unforgivable. As I turned the final page, I found myself pondering the truth that God loves us so incredibly much that he not only provided our salvation when Jesus stepped into the pages of history, but that he continues to actively reach out to us today in our brokenness. Max Lucado's novel demonstrates how God can do more than we can even imagine, and I find myself looking at those I interact with on a daily basis in a new way, wondering if I may be entertaining angels unawares. And most of all I am reminded that our prayers are indeed powerful and effective, accomplishing more than we can even understand this side of heaven. Who knew that reading a fiction novel could lead to a richer prayer life?

Although I have appreciated Max Lucado's past works, I must say that this adult fictional novel brings to life the spiritual truths he's so gifted at teaching in an entirely new - and welcome - way. I quite enjoyed this novel and award it 4 out of 5 stars.

Get ready for the release of "Do You Believe?" (releasing March 20!)

On March 20, 2015, the creators of "God's Not Dead" are releasing their next film, "Do You Believe?"

Do You Believe?

If you are like me, then you are totally excited to see this film. Make sure you check out the trailer below:

Here's a description of the film:

A dozen different souls—all moving in different directions, all longing for something more. As their lives unexpectedly intersect, they each are about to discover there is power in the Cross of Christ … even if they don't believe it.

When a local pastor is shaken to the core by the visible faith of an old street-corner preacher, he is reminded that true belief always requires action. His response ignites a faith-fueled journey that powerfully impacts everyone it touches in ways that only God could orchestrate.

This stirring new film from the creators of God's Not Dead arrives in theaters March 20, 2015. More than a movie, it's a question we all must answer in our lifetimes: DO YOU BELIEVE?
