Let's hope this stays fiction! "The Domino Effect" by Davis Bunn

Cover Art

about the book....

Esther Larsen, a top risk analyst at one of the country's largest banking institutions, is becoming more and more convinced that she has uncovered a ticking bomb with the potential to make the 2008 market crash look minor by comparison. And as her own employer pursues "investment" strategies with ever-increasing levels of risk, she becomes convinced she must do something. But Esther is only one person; can she stand up to an international conspiracy of greed? And if she does, will anyone take her seriously?

Every moment of indecision edges the markets closer to a tipping point--the teetering first domino in a standing row that circles the globe. And when Esther finds her voice, those she seeks to expose will not sit idly by. With global markets on the brink, and her own life in danger, Esther is locked in a race against the clock to avert a financial tsunami that threatens worldwide devastation.

my review....

One thought lay on my mind as I closed the covers of Davis Bunn's latest suspense novel: "Please Lord, let this stay fiction!" At times I wasn't sure if I was reading a novel or whether I was watching reality unfold, because the plot seems ripped right from the headlines. I couldn't put it down for a single moment! An ominous undertone pervades the book as the plot proceeds, and not just because the primary character Esther soon finds herself in the crosshairs of very powerful people who are seeking to end her life. Rather, it is the fragile global economy that seems about to implode, and the novel captures the impression that the common people today have around the world, that though things seem well on the surface, something is not right. And, indeed, it seems like society learned nothing from the financial crisis of 2008, but that the greed of humanity continues to plunge us towards an uncertain economic future!  What I most appreciate about this novel is that it is not one of those novels that leaves you with a feeling of gloom about life in general. Rather, it offers us a glimpse of what might be, a reminder that God is in control and that his people can push back against the forces of evil, and good can prevail. Bunn has, once again, done a great job at fleshing out likeable and relate-able characters, characters with struggles and flaws and doubts, yet ones that are heroic in their willingness to step up to their calling no matter the cost. Our world desperately needs the Esther's of this world to take their place on the stage of history and play their role, no matter how small or how significant that may be. Might you or I be the Esther our generations are waiting for?

I step away from this novel feeling cautious about the financial world around me, but also prayerful that in reality God is going to bring good out of whatever the future holds. I highly recommend this powerfully written, engaging novel, and guarantee that this is one book you do not want to miss! I award it 5 out of 5 stars.

Mandtory Reading for Parents of teen girls: "The 10 Myths of Teen Dating" by Daniel & Jacquelyn Anderson

The 10 Myths of Teen Dating

about the book...

There’s no greater moment of panic in a parent’s life than when their daughter begins to date.
Due to their lack of knowledge about the world their teens face coupled with the scant dating information they received as teens, many parents feel ill-equipped to guide their daughters through the minefield that is teen dating.
And by the same token, teenage girls crave information about dating and relationships. And left to their own devices, many will develop their own assumptions about dating by talking to their friends or watching the latest TV shows and movies. But that will only lead them down a path toward heartbreak.
So how do you engage your daughter in discussions about dating, relationships, and her future happiness? Expert educator Daniel Anderson and his twenty something daughter, Jacquelyn, help you navigate the biggest dating myths, including: the myth that a boyfriend will make your daughter happy, that she should trust her feelings, or that sex will enhance her relationship. Combining the latest scientific research with poignant personal stories, as well as proven truths and practical application, The 10 Myths of Teen Datingwill equip you to teach your daughter how to date smart for today . . . and tomorrow.
my review...

Having two daughters on the cusp of the teen years, I must admit to a certain amount of fear and trembling as I contemplate the reality that they are not that many years away from - gasp - dating! To the rescue come father-daughter team Daniel and Jacquelyn Anderson, offering up their collective wisdom to help parents guide their daughters through the teen years. The book is broken up into easy to ready chapters, and can either be read in one go or taken one chapter at a time. I thought the authors did a brilliant job at joining together the truth of the chapter, interspersed with Jacquelyn's thoughts based on her own experiences growing up, allowing readers to learn from both the good and the not-so-good parenting techniques she experienced (or observed in friends). The authors have a realistic understanding of today's culture and the challenges teens face, ones that simply didn't exist 20 or 30 years ago. Each chapter includes a "question for reflection" section that is well thought out and are a wonderful way to help the reader internalize the subject matter that the chapter focuses on. Personally, I most appreciated the "questions for you and your daughter to discuss" as they will help open up conversations that some parents just may not feel brave enough to bring up otherwise. In an era where more and more teens are engaging in sexual activity earlier and earlier, the negative emotional, physical, and spiritual consequences of NOT talking with our teens about these things are worse than ever.

I for one am grateful that a copy of this book landed in my hands. I feel much more equipped to chart my way through the teen years - and the issue of dating and sexuality - with my daughters, and there is good material in here that is applicable to my son as well. I strongly recommend this book and award it 4 out of 5 stars.

Beautifully written! "Long Way Gone" by Charles Martin

Tired of feeling stifled by his father, Cooper O'Connor grabs his father's life savings, turns his back on his childhood, and heads to Nashville to follow his dreams. But his dreams soon turn to dust when his pursuit of a career in music leads to him to lose everything. A chance encounter with rising musical star Daley Cross seems destined to lead to success in love and life, until a tragedy derails their plans and Cooper finds himself broken and alone up in the Colorado mountains. 20 years later, Cooper's past collides with his present with an outcome that he never could have even dreamed of!

"Long Way Gone" is a beautifully written, moving story that will linger long on my mind, beyond the moment I lovingly place the book on my shelf. I was absolutely captivated by the character of Cooper, with his incredible musical talent, his growth to become a selfless giver to others, and even the mistakes that he makes on his journey. That moment where he runs from all that is good in his life will resonate with each of us, because whether or not we've taken such a radical step as Cooper did, we have all expressed that rebellion in our own unique ways. This story is one of redemption, of reconciliation in the most moving of ways, of second chances that are not deserved but are offered by grace. Cooper's father is the father we all want to have on Earth, and a poignant picture of the Father that we do have in heaven, one who says that we can never go too far to outrun his embrace. Each scene is carefully crafted, and there are many unexpected moments that make for engaging reading. I especially enjoyed Cooper's encounters with the supernatural, and am intrigued to think back over my own life and wonder if I have "entertained angels unawares".

Every time I pick up a book by Charles Martin, I never know exactly what I am going to get. Once again, he has succeeded at offering up a story that not only entertained on every level, but touched me at my deepest core. I highly recommend this book and award it 5 out of 5 stars.

Great romantic suspense: "Without Warning" by Lynette Eason

Cover Art

about the book....

Intensity. Skill. Tenacity.

The bodyguards of Elite Guardians Agency have it all.

Katie Singleton, a partner with the Elite Guardians Protection Agency, stumbles upon her next assignment quite by accident. Spotting blue lights at a familiar restaurant, she stops to investigate, only to discover that owner Daniel Matthews has become the target of someone who will go to any lengths to put him out of business.

Daniel might be concerned, but he's not convinced that a bodyguard--and a female one at that--is necessary. A new attack and his niece's urgings are enough to make him reconsider. He and Katie must figure out who's behind the intimidation and threats--before a would-be killer strikes again.

my review....

Non-stop action and tension-infused scenes combine with a dash of romance to make "Without Warning" an utterly entertaining read. Both Katie (part of the Elite Guardians agency) and Daniel are likeable, strong characters who will capture reader's hearts with their painful pasts and their courage to confront danger head on to protect those they care about. I particularly liked Daniel's relationship with his niece, Riley, which reveals his tender heart to be her protector and provider. As each new twist was revealed in the story, I did my best to figure out who was behind the murder and all the other incidences targeting Daniel, but I have to admit I was kept guessing until the perpetrator was revealed as I couldn't figure out the motivation behind what was happening. Eason does a great job at building the suspense throughout the book, and I thought the ending was well done. Most of all, I love how faith is a very real part of these character's lives, a faith that allows doubts and questioning and yet arrives at the truth of God's goodness even through the times of pain. Readers will be able to relate to some of the difficult challenges that the characters struggle with, such as estrangement between Katie and her parents, or the loss Daniel deals with from Riley's parent's deaths. And like Katie, Daniel and Riley, I hope that readers who may not have reconciled to God will be encouraged to find the comfort that God offers to each of us.

The Elite Guardians series is proving to be one that you don't want to miss! "Without Warning" is a great follow-up to the first book in the series "Always Watching", and I am positive that fans of romantic suspense are going to want to grab a copy of this novel. I award this book a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Inspiring historical fiction: "This Road We Traveled" by Jane Kirkpatrick

Cover Art

about the book....

Tabitha Brown refuses to be left behind in Missouri when her son makes the decision to strike out for Oregon--even if she has to hire her own wagon to join the party. After all, family ties are stronger than fear.

Along with her reluctant daughter and her ever-hopeful granddaughter, the intrepid Tabitha has her misgivings. The trials they face along the way will severely test her faith, courage, and ability to hope. With her family's survival on the line, she must make the ultimate sacrifice, plunging deeper into the wilderness to seek aid. What she couldn't know was how this frightening journey would impact how she understood her own life--and the greater part she had to play in history.

With her signature attention to detail and epic style, New York Times bestselling author Jane Kirkpatrick invites you to travel the deadly and enticing Oregon Trail. Based on actual events, This Road We Traveled inspires the pioneer in all of us.

my review....

Once again, Kirkpatrick has succeeded at bringing history to life in her latest historical fiction novel, "This Road We Traveled". It is hard to believe that this book is based on a true story, simply because I cannot imagine how a woman of Tabitha's age accomplished what she did, when I don't think I could have done that journey and I am half of her age! Tabitha is a woman that is truly inspirational to read about, a woman of faith and remarkable courage, someone who uses the headstrong nature God gave her to truly accomplish remarkable things. Female readers of all ages will especially appreciate getting to know Tabby and will learn from the successes and mistakes that she makes in her life and on her journey across the country to Oregon. Kirkpatrick has done a wonderful job at fleshing out all of the characters that populate the characters of this story, capturing the historical flavor of the time period they lived in, and exploring their strengths and weaknesses, traits that make these characters utterly accessible to all of us. The novel moves at a steady pace, and though there were a couple of sections that I found slower than others, overall my attention was held from start to finish. Novels like this prove why Kirkpatrick is such a popular author, because she has proven once again that she is able to take history (which some people consider boring, if you can believe it!) and turn it into an entertaining, moving story that will stay with you long after you finish reading the final page.

"This Road We Traveled" is a wonderful tale that absolutely sets itself apart from other stories about travellers of the Oregon trail, with its depth of historical detail and its basis upon a woman who actually lived and breathed on the stage of history. I quite enjoyed this story and award it a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Even better than the first book in the series: "Flash Point" by Thomas Locke

Cover Art

about the book....

Will they shatter the boundaries of time and space?

Lena Fennan is a low-level financial analyst with a high-powered conviction. Just as she's on the verge of a life-transforming windfall, a mysterious invitation draws her into a series of events that threatens to crush her. But captivated by a glimpse into a breathtaking future, Lena refuses to give in.

Reese Clawson emerges from prison gripped by the slow burn of revenge. She aims to track down everyone who had a hand in destroying her--and take them out. First on the list is Charlie Hazard, who will be snared by their shared secret.

As events and places become tangled, Lena and Reese are pulled into a collision course that could redefine everything--even the limits of human possibilities.

my review....

If Thomas Locke is going to continue offering up books like this one, I may be in trouble. The moment I cracked open the cover of "Flash Point" I was swept up into this action-packed, thrilling story and I found it impossible to walk away until I came to the final chapter. Although I loved the first book in the series, "Trial Run", this second instalment seems to ramp up the thrills even more. Quite amazingly, although this is an epic battle between good and evil, I found myself feeling utter sympathy for Reese (not on the team I would typically cheer for), such that my loyalties between characters were blurred much more than with Trial Run. Locke has done a fantastic job at fleshing out the characters, and yet he does so in a way that doesn't detract from the pacing of the book in any way. The concept of Lena's journey is particularly fascinating, as she encounters a voice that gives direction that is utterly life changing to her. I don't want to reveal the origin of the voice, but let me tell you that it is quite a twist in the story! Although the story is not overtly Christian per se, both Reese and her team and Lena and her group encounter beings from beyond the veil that clearly point to demonic beings. Indeed, "Fault Lines" raises interesting possibilities of what people would encounter if they transcended time and space, and how God and angels and demons would fit into that reality.

At the end of the novel, things collide in a heart-stopping manner, and I am left eager to find out what the future holds for the various factions who are pushing the boundaries of good and evil, of what is real and of what isn't. Trial Run already introduced readers to a whole new type of fiction, and Flash Point succeeds at taking those concepts even further, in a way that makes for riveting reading.

If you loved Trial Run, you are going to greatly enjoy "Flash Point". And if you haven't yet read a Fault Lines novel, then what on earth are you waiting for? Make sure you add this one to your reading list! I award this book a high rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.

A great start to the series: "Traces of Guilt" by Dee Henderson

Cover Art

about the book....

She's turning up the heat on Carin County's cold cases . . .
Evie Blackwell loves her life as an Illinois State Police detective . . . mostly. She's very skilled at investigations and has steadily moved up through the ranks. She would like to find Mr. Right, but she has a hard time imagining how marriage could work, considering the demands of her job.

Gabriel Thane grew up in Carin County and is now its sheriff, a job he loves. Gabe is committed to upholding the law and cares deeply for the residents he's sworn to protect. He too would like to find a lifetime companion, a marriage like his parents have. . . .

When Evie arrives in Carin, Illinois, it's to help launch a new task force focused on unsolved crimes across the state. She will work with the sheriff's department on a couple of its most troubling missing-persons cases. As she studies old evidence to pull out a few tenuous new leads, she unearths surprising connections. One way or another, she knows Gabriel Thane and his family will be key to the answers she seeks.

my review....

I can easily say that "Traces of Guilt" is one of the most enjoyable Dee Henderson novels that I have read to date from her collection of writings. Once again, she has excelled at creating memorable, likeable characters, and I found myself completed engaged in the story as I watched Evie Blackwell chase down leads and unravel the past as she seeks to solve a cold case with the help of the other characters. Perhaps the one negative about the book is that it is quite long and sometimes I felt there were a few too many details. However, at the same time I appreciate that Henderson takes the time to thoroughly develop her characters to the point that you really get to know them, and come to be invested in the journey that they are on. The intricacies of the cold cases themselves are fascinating to read about, and Henderson appears to capture an authentic feel to the detective work. As the story unfolds, it is easy to see how the original police investigators ended up missing key elements that eventually are uncovered and lead to the truth. I gained a whole new appreciation for how complicated police work can be, and when you add in the high stress environments it is amazing that the police can accomplish what they do in real life! Although the novel is characterised as romantic suspense, it did not seem that the story is suspenseful in the sense of a character being afraid for their life. At the same time, there is a driving force at work in the story that will keep readers on their toes; because you come to care about the characters so much, you ache to see the truth revealed so that they can experience healing in their own journeys. When those moments happen, you will celebrate for the characters as they move forward, while feeling brokenhearted about the pain they have experienced.

All in all, there is much to love about this book, and I have no doubt that Dee Henderson fans will be well-pleased with her latest offering. Indeed, any reader who loves trying to unravel a mystery along with the characters will enjoy "Traces of Guilt". I give this book a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Suspenseful and timely: "The Candidate" by Lis Wiehl

The Candidate cover

Top-rated cable news host Erica Sparks has found great success working for GNN, but knows she needs to keep working harder than ever if her show is going to post higher ratings and her position is going to be further secured. With the next presidential election looming, Erica sets out to cover the candidates hoping to secure the next presidential win. But a sudden tragedy soon finds Erica investigating whether candidate Mike Ortiz and his wife Celeste are all they seem to be, or whether there is a layer of darkness hiding from the public's view. Erica's search for the truth soon finds her very life, and those she loves, at risk.

"The Candidate" is another edge-of-your seat thriller from Wiehl that is set at a break-neck pace. It was very difficult to put this book down, and the timing of this novel's release when there is a real-life presidential election underway in the USA makes the book all the more intriguing. Authors Wiehl and Stuart have offered up plenty of twists and turns that will keep readers guessing as they seek to figure out who is is in control and what exactly is going on. The book is written with a dark tone permeating the novel, and some readers unused to the subject matter may be turned off by the violence. However, as I typically enjoy suspense books, I found the scenes handled with an appropriate touch. And what I quite like about this book is that in the middle of all of the action, the authors are exploring Erica's relationship with her daughter, adding a complexity to the story as their relationship and the choices Erica makes add a whole other danger to the story. From start to finish, I found myself to be thoroughly entertained!

All in all, those who enjoy suspense books are going to want to pick up a copy of The Candidate. I enjoyed it even more than the first book in the series! I award the novel a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
