Another satisyfing story for Dickerson's fans: "The Silent Songbird" by Melanie Dickerson

Inspired by the story of The Little Mermaid, "The Silent Songbird" follows the story of Evangeline, cousin to King Richard II via an illigitimate relationship. With neither fortune nor title, she is entirely reliant on the King to arrange a marriage on her behalf. But when he chooses to betroth her to the much older and sinister Lord Shivley, Evangeline runs away to escape her fate. Pretending to be a servant girl who has permanently lost her voice, her beauty captures the attention of Westley le Wyse. While Evangeline learns to survive the life of a servant, her heart begins to long for a future with Wesltey, But soon Evangeline faces trouble on every side as she stumbles into intrigue in her hideaway, while trying to stay one step ahead of the men of Lord Shivley has sent hunting after her.

With a fascinating historical setting and characters who are strong and heroic, "The Silent Songbird" offers up a satisfying story for Dickerson's growing fan base. My pre-teen daughter devoured this book in one day, and said she loved the interesting plot "and of course Eva was my favourite character!" I also read the novel and agree that the book is filled with plenty of action-packed scenes, and a heroine who is equal parts brave and also somewhat naive at the same time. As such, she makes many mistakes along the way and so is a character readers will be able to relate to. Some of her actions and mannerisms at the beginning of the book seemed a tad juvenile to me and at first detracted from my enjoyment of the story, but then I realized that a sheltered young woman in that time period likely would act exactly as Evangeline does.  The romance in the story is handled well and is appropriate for the wide age range that this story is sure to attract, from pre-teens and teens to adults of any ages. I really appreciated the spiritual themes in this book, and Evangline's willingness to repent and put God's will before her own. That is a valuable lesson indeed for my daughter - and myself - to implement in our own lives. All in all, there is much to love about this story, and I am confident that this story will attract a whole new host of fans to Dickerson's books!

My daughter awards this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

A great conclusion to the series: "Tangled Webs" by Irene Hannon

Cover Art

about the book....

Finn has packed away his combat instincts--but he may need them again when danger begins to stalk his quiet hideaway . . .

After a disastrous Middle East mission ends his six-year Army Ranger career, Finn McGregor needs some downtime. A peaceful month in the woods sounds like the perfect way to decompress. But peace isn't on the agenda once he crosses paths with publishing executive Dana Lewis, a neighbor who is nursing wounds of her own. Someone seems bent on disrupting her stay in the lakeside cabin she inherited from her grandfather. As Finn and Dana work together to discover who is behind the disquieting pranks, the incidents begin to take on a menacing tone. And when it becomes apparent Dana's foe may have deadly intent, Finn finds himself back in the thick of the action--ready or not.

Bestselling author and three-time RITA Award winner Irene Hannon draws readers into a web of psychological suspense where danger lurks in dark corners . . . and keeps them captive until the very last page.

my review....

If you are looking for a book that will keep you glued to the pages, then "Tangled Webs" is just what you have been waiting for!

Irene Hannon once again satisfies with her final installment in the "Men of Valor" series, a book starring great characters who will instantly earn your sympathy and admiration. From the first chapter, I was drawn into Dana's story, curious about the cause of her nightmares that draw Finn into her life. Finn's past is equally intriguing, and Hannon does a good job at teasing out their histories in a believable way without things feeling rushed. Those readers looking for some romantic flavour will enjoy the instant chemistry that sparks between Finn and Dana, and the way these characters are able to encourage each other provides a deeper level of intimacy than simple physical attraction. I think the character that most interested me is actually Chief Burnett, as you can't help but feel for him as he's torn between what is good and ethical and the reality of needing to pay his wife's medical bills. He is one of those characters who is part hero, part villain, and though his situation doesn't at all excuse his behaviour, it reminds me that even the "bad" guys have a story that led them to where they are today. The solid plot and great characters combine to make for some entertaining reading, and those readers who've faithfully followed the Men of Valor series from the first book will feel rewarded for their patience in waiting for book 3, as it provides a great conclusion to the series.

"Tangled Webs" once again proves why Irene Hannon continues to be a favourite for readers who enjoy a good romantic suspense novel. I award this book a solid rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Action-packed suspense: Fatal Frost (Defenders of Justice Book #1) by Nancy Mehl

Cover Art

about the book....

Following in her absentee father's footsteps in a law enforcement career, U.S. Marshal Mercy Brennan has just recovered from being shot in the line of duty. And, unbeknownst to her, her father's recent reappearance in her life has put her in the sights of St. Louis's most powerful gang. Her boss assigns Deputy U.S. Marshal Mark St. Laurent--Mercy's ex-boyfriend--to get her out of town until her safety can be guaranteed.

Unaware of the extent her boss and Mark have been keeping her in the dark, it isn't until a freak ice storm strands them at a remote location and out of contact with the district office that the full severity of their situation becomes clear. As the storm worsens, the forces of nature combine with a deadly enemy to put them in great danger. Can they survive long enough for help to arrive--if help is even coming at all?

my review....

As media headlines today scream about police brutality and a growing distrust of those in authority, "Fatal Frost" presents an all too plausible scenario about how gangs could use such public hostility to target police officers. Mehl has done a great job at taking her well-drawn characters of U.S. Marshals Mercy and Mark, and exploring a "what-if" scenario that was chilling to consider.  What depths will people stoop to in order to protect their jobs, their future, their reputation, at cost of their integrity? "Fatal Frost" is a well-written book, one where the scenes ripple with tension and the characters will garner sympathy from readers. Mehl demonstrates that so often there is more to people than meets the eye, and that even the "bad guys" can have another side to them that paints a different picture of what is going on. As a male reader, I can sometimes be a bit wary about what sort of romance I am going to encounter in picking up a "romantic suspense" novel, but I felt that the author handled this well, and there weren't any moments for me that made me want to put down the book. Instead, I was quite entertained by the plot and the twists and turns that kept me glued to the pages. I also appreciated that the novel is clean and one that a wide audience can appreciate because of this.

Action-packed scenes starring strong characters, as well as a dash of romance, make for some fun reading in Nancy Mehl's latest novel. I award this book a solid 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it to all those readers who enjoy a good romantic suspense novel, female and male readers alike.

I wish this fiction were real! A Primary Decision by Dr. Kevin Leman and Jeff Nesbit

Cover Art

about the book....

The road to power and position is fraught with perils, even for a Worthington.

But Sarah does not intend to lose.

Sarah Worthington never expected to become the US attorney general--at least not this early in her career. Plunged into the vicious vetting process, with all sides digging for secrets in her family closet, she steels herself for the path forward. Nothing will deter her from making her mark on the world in the biggest way possible--even if that means prosecuting the current president of the United States.

Yet powerful forces conspire behind the scenes to take the Worthington family down, and the president orders her to close the investigation. Will she comply? Or turn the tables to pursue her ultimate dream--the US presidency?

my review....

I must say that it's not often that I read a fiction book, about American politics no less, and wish that it were real! With the present American politicial landscape the way that it is, I wish there truly was a person like Sarah, one with honesty, integrity, and a passion for social justice, eager to set the example for the world regarding what a country's leader should be like. I quite enjoyed watching Sarah grow over the course of the three Worthington Destiny novels and especially in this book, and emerge to be a person truly comfortable with what God has called her to do. (And I must admit that as the youngest child myself, I may have been a bit biased throughout the series rooting for her success!)

Leman and Nesbit have definitely succeeded at crafting a series that not only entertained with the twists and turns of the story, but did a wonderful job at fleshing out how birth order impacts children as they grow into adulthood. Although this series tended to pigeon hole the siblings into their familial roles perhaps more than I myself have experienced, it is so very apparent that where you are born in a family's birth order truly does impact the decisions you make throughout your life. Sarah definitely characterizes a youngest sibling's traits with her winsome ways, her gifts of being very persuasive and liking to be the center of attention. Each of these characters are so very well rounded and if you are like me you will enjoy getting to know them in this story!

I think what I liked the most not only about "A Primary Decision" but indeed the whole series is that each of these characters is imperfect and makes mistakes, and that makes them utterly relatable. I did find that a couple of sections of the book dragged a little more than others as I thought that sometimes there could have been a little more action regarding the way the secrets were revealed. But on the whole, I thought the authors did a fine job building the tension, especially when Sarah has a show-down with a journalist at a key event. Leman and Nesbit did a great job tying up some loose ends with this final book, while leaving enough to the imagination to keep you thinking about this novel beyond the final pages.

I award this book a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Readers who want a good fiction book that will also teach them about why their family interacts the way it does should pick up a copy not only of this book but the whole series!

Will change your family! "The Prayer Saturated Family" by Cheryl Sacks

Cover Art

about the book....

Learn to pray together and see your family transformed!

In our world of busy schedules and digital distractions, it's hard for families to find time to eat dinner together, let alone pray together. Yet praying together deepens relationships, alleviates fighting and strengthens family ties more than any single thing you can do.

With a fresh, flexible, real-world approach, bestselling author Cheryl Sacks shows how you can integrate prayer into your daily family life, including how to:

· Get everyone on board and involved
· Experience a fresh sense of God's promise and purpose for your family
· Overcome spiritual opposition coming against your household
· Shift the spiritual atmosphere in your home to one of greater peace and joy
· Make an investment in your children's faith that will last a lifetime

You will also discover how a family that prays together becomes an unstoppable force for good, bringing God's answers to impossible situations. And it can start with you! Through prayer, you have the power not only to change the atmosphere of your home but also to be part of changing the spiritual atmosphere wherever you go.

my review....

Cheryl Sacks has offered up a very well-written, practical book about the power of prayer and how to help your family become a family that turns first to prayer above everything else. The book is easy to read, and I appreciate the conversational style Sacks has written the book in. And, what I most enjoyed about the book is the real-world examples, from Sacks' family and from many other families, demonstrating how prayer releases God's power into your home and the world around you. I think that our media-saturated culture results in so much negativity pervading our families, along with temptations that previous generations did not even have to face. Sacks reminds us that "prayer can help us navigate the often uncertain landscape of life, and seek the direction, wisdom and presence of God along the way. It is amazing how, when we look back, we can see what God has done - especially when we invite Him into our families and allow his His Spirit to change the atmosphere of our homes". How amazing that God offers us a way to invite his presence into our lives, and he does so in such a very real and tangible way! I personally know that the very act of lifting up my children in prayer every day brings me such peace, and God has certainly answered prayers in our family time and time again. I also want to mention that one of the most amazing parts of the book is the "31-Day Family Prayer Guide" included at the end of the book, offering guidance to truly engage every member of the family in making prayer a daily part of the family life. Following this prayer guide will certainly challenge every member of the family (i.e. doing a prayer walk at your school), and may push you out of your comfort zone. But what an amazing blessing it is to have God truly use us to change the world around us, and prayer is the avenue he uses to do so!

I highly recommend this book for every family seeking to make God the center of their lives, and to unite together for Jesus. I award this book 5 out of 5 stars.
