about the book....

Following in her absentee father's footsteps in a law enforcement career, U.S. Marshal Mercy Brennan has just recovered from being shot in the line of duty. And, unbeknownst to her, her father's recent reappearance in her life has put her in the sights of St. Louis's most powerful gang. Her boss assigns Deputy U.S. Marshal Mark St. Laurent--Mercy's ex-boyfriend--to get her out of town until her safety can be guaranteed.

Unaware of the extent her boss and Mark have been keeping her in the dark, it isn't until a freak ice storm strands them at a remote location and out of contact with the district office that the full severity of their situation becomes clear. As the storm worsens, the forces of nature combine with a deadly enemy to put them in great danger. Can they survive long enough for help to arrive--if help is even coming at all?

my review....

As media headlines today scream about police brutality and a growing distrust of those in authority, "Fatal Frost" presents an all too plausible scenario about how gangs could use such public hostility to target police officers. Mehl has done a great job at taking her well-drawn characters of U.S. Marshals Mercy and Mark, and exploring a "what-if" scenario that was chilling to consider.  What depths will people stoop to in order to protect their jobs, their future, their reputation, at cost of their integrity? "Fatal Frost" is a well-written book, one where the scenes ripple with tension and the characters will garner sympathy from readers. Mehl demonstrates that so often there is more to people than meets the eye, and that even the "bad guys" can have another side to them that paints a different picture of what is going on. As a male reader, I can sometimes be a bit wary about what sort of romance I am going to encounter in picking up a "romantic suspense" novel, but I felt that the author handled this well, and there weren't any moments for me that made me want to put down the book. Instead, I was quite entertained by the plot and the twists and turns that kept me glued to the pages. I also appreciated that the novel is clean and one that a wide audience can appreciate because of this.

Action-packed scenes starring strong characters, as well as a dash of romance, make for some fun reading in Nancy Mehl's latest novel. I award this book a solid 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it to all those readers who enjoy a good romantic suspense novel, female and male readers alike.
