Will leave your pulse racing! "A Deadly Business" by Wiehl & Henry

A Deadly Business, Lis Wiehl

Seattle prosecutor Mia Quinn returns in fine form in "A Deadly Business". Juggling work and family life as a single parent is demanding, but things get near the breaking point when she gets a disturbing case where she must decide whether 3 teen boys should be tried as adults. At the same time she learns that her deceased husband was hiding more secrets than she'd yet discovered. As Mia seeks answers, both to the cause of her husband's death and the case she's prosecuting, she soon finds that uncovering the truth may hurt her "in more ways than one".

I enjoyed "A Deadly Business" just as much, if not more, than the first book in the Mia Quinn Mystery series! The action explodes from the first pages and doesn't let up until the harrowing conclusion. I am not exaggerating when I state that I couldn't step away from the book for more than a moment, and just had to sneak in one more chapter before returning to real life! Wiehl and Henry continue to be a top-notch writing team, with crisp and vivid writing that will leave your pulse racing. Although the authors weave together two story lines, that of Mia's private life involving her late husband, and her current case, they blend the worlds together extremely well and use the alternating plots to keep the story moving along at a break-neck pace. As Mia faces threats from every side, threats to make the wrong decision, fail as a parent, lose her job, or battle for her very life, readers will come to care deeply for this courageous character who stands for what is right. The characters are wonderfully developed, and the hint of romance developing between Mia and homicide detective Charlie & fellow lawyer Eli make for some intriguing, and entertaining, reading. Although the story is light on faith, Mia is clearly a character seeking to return to the roots of what she believes about God, all while doing the right thing along the way. Whether readers already follow God or are still seeking the truth, they will be held spellbound by "A Deadly Business" and the wonderful Mia who they will befriend through the pages.

This book definitely ranks as one of my favourite suspense reads so far this year. 5 out of 5 stars!

One of her best yet! "Sidetracked" by Brandilyn Collins

About the Book...

When you live a lie for so long, it becomes a part of you. Like clothing first rough and scratchy, it eventually wears down, thins out. Sinks into your skin.

Thirty-four-year-old Delanie Miller has fled her dark past and is now settled into a quiet life in small-town Kentucky. She has friends, a faux "family" who lives in her house, and a loving boyfriend who may soon ask her to marry him. Her aching dream of a husband and future children are about to come true. But protecting this life of promise means keeping a low profile and guarding the truth of her past--from everyone.

The town's peace is shattered when Delanie's friend, Clara, is murdered, and Delanie finds her body. The police chief quickly zeroes in on Billy King, a simple-minded young man whom Delanie knows would never hurt Clara. Delanie can hunt down evidence and speak out publicly against the chief--only at great risk of her own exposure. But after suffering such injustice in her own past, how can she keep silent now? Delanie must find a way to uncover Clara's murderer yet save the life she's created for herself--the deceit-ridden life that will forever distance her from others and God.

MY REVIEW

“Side-tracked” is a nail-biting read, one that captured me from the first page and kept me entwined in its grip until the end. Although the story involves murder, this is not one of those suspense stories where characters are constantly in mortal danger from being shot at. Rather, the tension swiftly builds throughout the story as readers watch the injustices unfold and are left wondering the fate of those who appear to be wrongly accused for the crimes. In fact, I found myself so tense at some of the scenes, especially those from the past, that I had to force myself to relax! The writing is crisp, a pleasure to read, with a heroine that you will grow to love. Although at first I wondered how I would enjoy the change in story line from the present-day Delanie to the past scenes of Laura, I enjoyed both equally and found them to be woven seamlessly together. In the midst of the suspense and unfolding drama, there are also deeper moments where characters encounter God, battle bitterness, and find the courage to face the consequences of their past actions and also the grace to forgive. I won't even hint at what the ending is of course, but I will say this - it is totally satisfying!

I devoured this book in short order as I simply couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this latest novel from Brandilyn Collins, and award it 5 out of 5 stars.

A historically fascinating read! "Daisies are Forever" by Liz Tolsma

Daisies Are Forever, Liz Tolsma

Near the end of Wold Ward II, Gisela Cramer flees from the advancing Soviet Army, along with her two nieces and other refugees she picks up along the way. In the midst of winter, they head to Berlin, fighting for their lives each step of the way as they battle cold and ice below and bullets and bombs from the sky. En route to Berlin, Gisela meets Mitch, a British prisoner of war who has escaped and is on the run. As they face one trial after another, they must learn that true hope lies beyond what they can see.

"Daisies are Forever" is a harrowing read, one that brings the trials of World War II to vivid life. As Gisela, her nieces, and flood of refugees fled before the Soviet army, I found myself gripping the pages and hoping they would stay safe! Tolsma has done a wonderful job at creating a heroine that you can believe in, one who faces danger head on and clings to hope in the darkest of nights. I enjoyed how the author has woven faith into the story and demonstrated God's hand of provision. Gisela and Mitch's story is well written, and I enjoyed many of their encounters. When I learned that her race to Berlin and her encounters in that city are based on true stories, that made me appreciate the story and their experiences all the more. However, I will say that I greatly enjoyed the first half of the story, and only tolerated the second half. I did not like the scheming of some of the other characters (i.e. Kurt), who are determined to break up Gisela and Mitch's growing affection for each other. I simply found this aspect of the story to be rather juvenile and to take away from the amazing journey Gisela is living out. I couldn't imagine that characters facing bombs and starvation and certain death would act in the manner depicted. Thus I found myself riveted by some parts of the story and annoyed by others. I did find the historical context of the story to be highly intriguing however, and that in and of itself made this a worthy read.

I encourage you to pick up a copy of "Daisies are Forever" and experience World War II in a way you may never have done before. Though much of the story I highly recommend and would give a rating of 5 out of 5 stars, the inclusion of the aspects mentioned above lower my rating to 3.5 out of 5 stars.

"Life Behind the Wall" by Robert Elmer

ISBN: 9780310742654

Just in time for the 55th Anniversary of the creation of the Berlin Wall, 3 of Robert Elmer's novels have been bundled together and republished as "Life Behind The Wall". The compilation includes Candy Bombers, Hidden Bunker, and Smuggler's Treasure, and all three feature teenagers who are living in Berlin. The stories follow three generations, beginning with teen cousins Erich and Katarina in 1948, who are struggling to survive in the aftermath of war as the Soviet army blockades the east side of the city. Beetle Bunker then moves to the story of Sabine, who is Erich's much younger half-sister who discovers an underground bunker that she soon realizes can take her family under the wall to West Berlin. Finally, in Smuggler's Treasure readers will meet Erich's niece, Liesl, who enjoys the safety of West Berlin until she stumbles onto a secret that changes everything.

I quite enjoyed these three story that take place in a fascinating era that I haven't read about in children's fiction before. Each of the stories feature characters that readers will definitely relate to, and while I found some of the writing to be a bit choppy, overall I found them to be well-written. There is much excitement and intrigue to keep readers hooked from beginning to end, and I love that you don't have to wait for the next book in the series to keep reading the next installment! It can be a challenge to depict the horrors of war in a way that is appropriate to children, while still entertaining and educating them about a time where people lived in fear and yet also lived out inspiring lives as well. Yet Robert Elmer has done an excellent job at writing a series that is accessible to all and that can be enjoyed as good books while stirring conversation about actual historical events at the same time. I love that the characters wrestle with issues of forgiveness and what true courage and bravery looks like. These are things we will all deal with at different points in our lives. While the books are aimed at teens, I believe adults would enjoy these stories just as much.

Parents and teens looking for clean, suspenseful and entertaining stories should pick up a copy of "Life Behind the Wall". I strongly recommend this compilation and award it 4 out of 5 stars.

A chilling conclusion that ultimately points to Hope: "Godless" by Dobson & Bruner

Godless

about the book...

The nightmares have returned. Something, or someone, wants to drag Julia Davidson back into a dreadful conflict she assumed was a distant memory. Was this, like before, the echo of another person's dream? Is she responsible to rescue faces she doesn't recognize but can't forget? Do the murky images suggest she has a part to play in whatever ominous events lie ahead?

Things are finally looking up for Matthew Adams. As the top earner at MedCom Associates he has started to crawl out of the financial hole created during his "dark days." And now, out of the blue, a mysterious woman invites him to join a confidential research initiative. She says it will ease the mounting economic crisis. But at what cost to Matthew's fragile sanity, and his tortured soul?

Pastor Alex Ware faces a serious problem. The honeymoon period at Christ Community Church has ended. The finance committee says they can't afford another year of dwindling income and dismal growth. The board wants action, now! Aging parishioners would gladly allocate a portion of their estate to help. But only if Alex stops condemning the transition industry and starts affirming what the Youth Initiative calls "our heroic volunteers."

In Fatherless and Childless, Dr. James Dobson and Kurt Bruner depicted a time in which present-day trends come to sinister fruition. This eagerly awaited conclusion vividly imagines what happens when God's image on earth is exchanged for the horrors of a GODLESS world.

my review....

Dobson and Bruner return in fine form with the conclusion to their series, "Godless". With mounting tension, the authors explore a world where all truth is relative and God seems to be no more, where the young encourage their elderly parents to commit suicide and call it "heroism", where the idea of having children naturally is looked upon with derision. I loved becoming reacquainted with the characters from the first two books (Fatherless and Childless), but most loved the character of Pastor Alex Ware as he finds himself facing the temptation to compromise - and finds himself giving in. How many of us have faced similar situations and sat by silent? Yet over the course of the story Alex rises up to face his challenges head on, and you can't help but respect his courage. The misguided Matthew Adams also returns and we find him in one chilling predicament after another, to the point of being sickened by his actions. And yet there is a lesson to be seen there too as we see the outcome of his choices. There were many moments of the story where a feeling of hopelessness pervades the scenes. Yet this makes the end all the more sweeter as we see characters take a stand with courage. It would be impossible to read this book and indeed the prior two as well, and not walk away with a different view on our society. The discouraging scenarios described in this book do not have to become reality. Rather, like the characters depicted by Dobson and Bruner, we can make the choice to stand up for truth, and offer a future of freedom to those around us, a future where children and family are celebrated, where life is respected and honoured. May all of us rise up to that challenge!

Godless is action-packed drama at its best, combining an exciting plot with inspiring characters. If you haven't yet picked up the first two books in the series, I encourage you to do so and read all three from start to finish. It is time well spent! I award this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Masterfully told: "Sarah's Choice" by Nancy Rue & Rebecca St. James

Sarah's Choice, Rebecca St. James

Nancy Rue and Rebecca St. James return for another joint effort with "Sarah's Choice", a novel that follows the emotional journey of a woman who is caught in a situation where every option seems to be an impossible choice.  Sarah has turned her back on God after the loss of her father, yet at the same times blames him for abandoning her. After taking on the financial burden of paying off the debts he left behind so that her mother is not crushed under the bills, Sarah is focused on getting a promotion that will help her start living again. She is convinced that the pay increase, followed by a new car and apartment, will turn her bleak life around. When she finds out she's pregnant, she doesn't believe she can count on her boyfriend to stand by her as he's never shown himself to be responsible but is always chasing one scheme after another. As all the people in her life try to make her choose the path they feel is best for her, Sarah must discover what she believes, and find the courage to make the right choice.

As with their prior collaboration (The Merciful Scar), I greatly enjoyed this latest book from these talented authors. While the book is primarily aimed at women, I think that anyone would enjoy delving into this story, and discovering the plans God has for our lives. The issue of abortion is a difficult one indeed, both for women and for men who are also impacted by the decision to end the life of a child. The authors have done a fantastic job at looking at the issue from many different angles, exploring the many reasons abortion is considered, and the terrible emotional fallout arising from such decisions. I also like the mysterious supernatural element to the story where Sarah is given visions of the possible future should she choose to keep the baby or abort. Other deep themes like forgiveness and reconciliation are also explored, along with the role of men as fathers and the need for men to man up and take responsibility for their choices as well. The words flow smoothly, and I found my emotions to be deeply engaged as I read through the story. The characters are realistic and ones I easily connected with, and I found myself wishing I could meet them again in future novels!

Poignant, moving, and ultimately hopeful, "Sarah's Choice" is a wonderful book. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

A review copy was received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I was in no way compensated for this review.

Quite a ride! "Persecuted" by Robin Parrish

Cover Art

about the book....

"The framers of our Constitution meant we were to have freedom of religion, not freedom from religion." --Reverend Billy Graham

The Question Is Not If Attempts Will Be Made
to Limit Religious Freedoms, But When.

And When That Day Comes, Will You Stay Silent?

A storm is coming.

The most popular evangelist of his day, John Luther, simply wants to share the Gospel and enjoy a quiet life with his family. He never asked to be at the center of a political controversy, but an ill wind has been blowing through the halls of Congress, and supporters of a new religious-equality bill see Luther's endorsement as critical.

But when Luther refuses to lend his support, he unknowingly sets in motion an explosive plan bent on destroying his reputation and undermining everything for which he stands. His once-normal life is turned upside down as he becomes a fugitive left with only one dangerous option--putting everything he holds most dear at risk while he fights to expose the truth. It is a mission that brings him face-to-face with the coming storm of persecution that could threaten the very fabric of our nation's freedoms.

my review....

"Persecuted" is quite a ride, filled with non-stop action from beginning to end, and based on a premise that is sobering to consider. What would the future be like if religious freedom were legislated away? I greatly enjoyed the character of John Luther, a man I couldn't help but admire with his sordid past and his remarkable change that can only be explained by the grace of Christ. I am confident that many readers will be able to identify with Luther's pre-Christ decisions, with his wandering heart and selfish desire to chase after drugs or alcohol or money or women. We may not all struggle with such overt sin, but we all spend time worshiping at alters other than the Lord's! The thought of a "Faith and Fairness" act that tries to legislate unity among religions seems almost bizarre to consider, yet I know that many would read this book and think that such an act would indeed be something worth celebrating! This book is an excellent reminder that persecution takes place every day, both in North America, and especially around the world, and that we need to be spiritually on our guard. I did find a few of the plot elements were difficult to swallow (I hesitate to say more for fear of spoiling to plot), but this didn't really detract from my enjoyment of the book. Rather, I found myself entertained from start to finish, and found the authors did a good job at balancing the scenes taking place in present time, where John was racing for his life, with those scenes from his past which provide such a powerful contrast for illustrating God's power and love for us all.

I award this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars, and believe that both male and female readers will enjoy this solid read, one that will leave them deep in thought about whether we are willing to stand up for Christ, no matter the cost.

Will entertain and challenge you! "Fifteen Minutes" by Karen Kingsbury

about the book....

Zack Dylan has a dream. He wants to sing on the biggest stages, for the biggest crowds, and he’ll do whatever it takes to make it come true. But Zack also made a promise to his college sweetheart when he left Kentucky to compete on the popular TV show, Fifteen Minutes: If he made it, nothing would change him or his faith in God.

Overnight, Zack becomes the nation’s most popular contestant, a country singer comparable to a young Tim McGraw. As his star rises, Zack is often asked to compromise and quiet his beliefs. Just as he’s on the verge of winning it all, his choices lead him to the brink of personal disaster. Meanwhile, a former Fifteen Minutes winner is searching for meaning amidst her own private losses. Can she warn Zack about the real price of fame? Or will Zack lose everything he loves for his fifteen minutes of glory?

my review....

With likable characters and heart-tugging scenes, Karen Kingsbury latest novel is sure to garner her new fans! I will admit that I have watched many a season of "American Idol" and Kingsbury does a great job at catching the excitement of such a show in her fictional "Fifteen Minutes" reality t.v. seires. Her writing brings the scenes to life such that I could perfectly picture the contestants and particularly Zack Dylan as he makes his way through the rounds of the competition. My heart was pounding while watching some of his performances and I felt like I was rooting for him as though he were real. Because of this, I felt all the more emotionally engaged when he started down the road to compromise, and I was soon caught up in the drama surrounding Zach, his girlfriend Reese, and the temptation of all that the world has to offer Zach. As he made one poor choice after another, I found myself examining my own life and the areas that I can be tempted to compromise in. I think any of us can admit that there are times our own selfish desires trample the feelings of those around us and lead us down a path away from the good that God desires. The two judges who end up connecting with Zach provide a powerful example indeed in how our culture's long for fame so often leads to self-destruction! Like me, readers will not only be wonderfully entertained but will find themselves challenged in their own walk with God.

I strongly recommend this book and award it a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars. Not only is this good writing - it is full of powerful truths as well!

Will leave you craving more: My review of "One Perfect Spring" by Irene Hannon

Cover Art

about the book....

Independent single mom Claire Summers is doing her best to make lemonade out of the lemons life has handed her. Workaholic Keith Watson is interested only in the bottom line--until a letter from Claire's eleven-year-old daughter reaches his desk and changes everything.

As the executive assistant to a philanthropic businessman, Keith is used to fielding requests for donations. But the girl isn't asking for money. She wants help finding the long-lost son of a neighbor. As Keith reluctantly digs into this assignment in his usual results-oriented style, he has no idea how involved he and Claire will become--nor how unusual the results will actually be. Who could have guessed that a child's kindhearted request would bring love and hope to so many lives . . . including his own?

Through compelling characters and surprising plot twists, fan favorite Irene Hannon offers this tenderhearted story that demonstrates how life is like lilacs--the biggest blooms come only after the harshest winters.

my review....

Featuring characters as every bit real as you and I, Irene Hannon's latest read will leave you craving more! The plot moves along at a steady pace as the author explores the true meaning of love and life, and how wrong decisions in the past can be overcome by taking a hopeful leap into the future. I enjoyed the many characters that grace the pages of the book, especially the character of 11-year-old Haley as her perspective on life brought both some tender and humorous moments to the story. The romances that develop throughout the story will have readers heaving a sigh (though I do wonder why the characters must always be so lovely looking and muscly). I found myself contemplating the issue of adoption and all the emotions that this would bring along with it. I can't imagine going through some of the experiences these characters do! Although I most enjoy Hannon's suspense books, I found this to be a thoroughly satisfying read as well, with beautiful writing, likable characters, and deep emotion. I like how Hannon's characters make mistakes, mistakes that any of us may find ourselves dealing with in our own lives, and how she shows that God can redeem even the hardest moments and offer us second chances.

I give this book a solid recommendation and a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.Fans of Irene Hannon will definitely enjoy this book and be glad they spent time in a world she's once again created with her talented pen.

Minutes after opening "Curious Creatures", my children were reading all sorts of facts out loud to me. Did you know a Koala's baby is called a joey? Or that anteaters can eat up to 30,000 ants in one day? Combining four books into one (Rainforest Friends; Jungle Beasts; Polar Pals; and Curious Creatures Down Under), the book is a treasure trove of information about the amazing creatures God has made. Each book is written at a  "Level 2" of the I Can Read series, aimed at developing readers, and my children were able to enjoy the book both on their own and while reading it with me.

I can honestly say that this is one of my favourite children's products to be published this year. The pictures are absolutely gorgeous, and each page is jam packed with useful information that I found just as interesting to read about as my children did! I love the emphasis the book places on the fact that these amazing creatures are made by God, with Bible verses throughout that celebrate his works. This is the type of book that your children can read through in one sitting, or can be enjoyed in brief stints as well. It has quickly become a favorite in the family, and my children have spent hours perusing the pages. The hardcover binding makes it very sturdy, and likely to last a long time, something I always look for when I know a book will often be handled by little hands. The writing is easy to follow and the facts truly are fascinating, a perfect combination for my kids!

If you have a developing reader in your family and are looking for a book that will engage their attention while improving their reading skills, then this is the perfect book for you! Your children will come away with a fresh appreciation for God's amazing handiwork - and you will probably learn something new yourself along the way. I give this book a high recommendation and a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

A thrilling conclusion to a thought-provoking series: My review of "Spirit Bridge" by James L. Rubart

Spirit Bridge, James L. Rubart

The Warriors Riding return in fine form in the final installment of the "Well Spring" series. Brandon, Marcus, Reece and Dana have embraced their calling and gone to battle in the spiritual realms, seeing tremendous success with the Spirit's leading. At the same time, they have endured life-altering attacks that have left deep wounds behind that have been allowed to fester, wounds that need time to heal. But the demon warlord Zennon battles on without pause as he unleashes a hidden plan to take the team down, from the inside out. Soon the Warriors find themselves facing their greatest challenge yet, with their very lives at stake.
"Spirit Bridge" is an amazing tale, an epic conclusion to a series that has truly challenged me spiritually and left me longing for the intimate relationship the Warriors experience with each other and the Holy Spirit. The story is action-packed with scenes of good and evil abounding, all leading up to a truly memorable battle between angels, demons, and the Warriors. Now, I will say that Brandon's character annoyed me quite a bit in this book - likely as was designed to do, as he is reeling at the loss of his voice and what this means for his future. But though on occasion I found his character to be simply unlikable, the Brandon at the beginning of the book provides for a fine contrast for the transformation that readers trust is to come. All in all, the characters in Spirit Bridge are intriguing and original, and I enjoyed watching them grow and be challenged over the course of the novel. I loved the introduction of Miyo to the scene as well, and I think it would be awesome to meet her again in a future Rubart novel! Rubart's writing is as exciting and as thought-provoking as ever, and I truly enjoyed not only this book but the entire series.

I strongly recommend this book and award it 4 out of 5 stars. Those who have missed the first two books in the series (Soul's Gate and Memory's Door) should plan on picking up copies of their own and diving right in to these excellent books!
