A pleasant read: Summer's List by Anita Higman
about the book...
A dying wish alters the course of a young woman’s life.
Life hadn’t been easy for Summer Snow. In acts of selflessness-caring for her ailing parents and running her grandmother’s bookstore-she had forfeited her youth and dreams for the needs of others. And the only tries she had at love… didn’t turn out. She had the bookstore, she had her beloved granny, but she was missing something-or someone.
Opportunity strikes when Granny sends Summer on an unexpected adventure with one Martin Langtree, a kind but gangly young man from Summer’s past. A childhood friendship is rekindled, a romance is sparked, and mysteries are solved in one magical Texas summer. Will Summer strike out on love again, or will things finally go her way?
my review...
Summer's List is a pleasant read filled with unique, quirky characters who encounter the beauty of forgiveness, second chances, and love. Summer is a sweet soul, and she is sure to endear herself to readers with her loyalty to her grandmother, her servant's heart, and her tragic past. I enjoyed the underlying plot of the story where her grandmother sends her off on a life changing adventure, with lots of unexpected encounters along the way. Like Summer, Granny Snow is also such a loveable person, as she embodies what it means to put others first, and her words and her life are full of wisdom and a love for God. I can just see the twinkle in her eye as she sends Summer down a path to find love with her childhood friend Martin! Now, I must say that I bogged down a bit in places, such as the scenes where we are introduced to Martin's very dysfunctional brothers and things just got plain weird with them. Also, the ease with which Summer breaks her engagement seems a bit too unrealistic, even if her former fiance appeared to be an empty-hearted cad. However, despite these story elements, there is much to enjoy in the mysteries and secrets of this story, and the way that Summer is allowed to find real love with someone who appreciates her just the way that God has made her. May we all blessed to discover that person in our lives!
Readers who are looking for a book to bring to the beach with them on a hot summer's day should grab a copy of Anita Higman's latest novel. This sweet story may be just what you were looking for! I award this novel 3 out of 5 stars.
