A marvelous tale of overcoming: "Beyond the Silence" by Peterson and Woodhouse
about the book....
The Shadows Over This Olive Grove
Hide More Than Just the Truth
Lillian Porter has always wanted to fulfill her mother's dream of going west, so when she hears about a nanny position in Angels Camp, California, she defies her grandfather and takes a chance on a new future. But she quickly wonders if she made the right choice. Murky rumors swirl around Woodward Colton, her new employer, but the gossip doesn't match the man Lillian comes to know.
Still, something dark did happen in the family's past. Lillian's seven-year-old charge hasn't spoken in over a year. Gently, Lillian tries to coax him out of his shell, hoping he'll one day feel safe enough to share what scared him. But the Colton olive farm is no longer a safe place. Lillian encounters suspicious characters on their land and mysterious damage done to the farm. When the housekeeper is brutally attacked, the town once again suspects the worst. Will discovering the truth help Lillian clear the name of the man she has come to love--or will it endanger her even more?
my review...
Authors Peterson and Woodhouse have teamed up once again, crafting a marvelous tale of overcoming adversity and of finding unexpected love, with characters who will completely win you over. Not surprisingly, I think my favourite characters were the young Jimmy, who has been traumatized into silence as he's afraid to speak a word of the horrors that he saw when his mother died, along with the simple-minded Harry who befriends him. And yet how could I not also love the spunky Lillian, especially the scene where she rises up to defend Woodward Colton against the town people? The authors have woven these character's stories together in a compelling manner, providing wonderfully enriching historical details that truly bring the story to life. As I read through the novel, I loved that the tension mounted more and more as the family not only faced concern of further attacks against their property by the madman who murdered Jimmy's mother, but also a town who was so caught up by rumours and gossip that they became determined to unfairly blame Colton for murder! Never have I read a story that so clearly shows the danger of gossip, that it can go beyond just the act of tarnishing people's reputation to truly threaten their very life. I found myself examining my own thoughts and actions and considering how I impact those around me, for good or for evil.
"Beyond the Silence" is an emotionally engaging story that not only kept me glued to the pages by its entertaining plot and intriguing characters, but even now remains in my thoughts long after the book was placed on the shelf. I strongly recommend this story and award it a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.
