Will put you in the Christmas spirit: "Christmas at Carnton" by Tamera Alexander

Set in the heart of Tennessee at the Carnton Plantation during the civil war, "Christmas at Carnton" is just what you've been looking for in the lead up to the Christmas season. Aletta Prescott has recently become a widow, and is struggling to care for her six-year-old son but simply cannot find work. Confederate sharpshooter Captain Jake Winston has been wounded and while recovering is sent to the Carnton Plantation to lend a helping hand and boost people's morale by taking part in a Women's Relief Society Auction. When Jake and Aletta's paths unexpectedly cross, they discover a friendship and chance at love that offers healing for their wounded hearts.

Heart-warming scenes, likeable characters, and themes of hope combine to create a cozy read that will put a smile on your face! I quite enjoyed this journey to the plantation, especially knowing that actual elements of history have been woven into this story, giving it an appealing and authentic flavour. Being a novella, the story is shorter than Alexander's usual fare, but she has managed to put a lot of heart and soul into this book, and I have no doubt that her fans are going to love every minute. I read it through in one sitting because I was anxious to see how things were going to turn out. The author succeeded at transporting me back in time such that I felt like I was walking among the people and suffering - yet finding hope - by their side. I am very intrigued by all the side characters who appear in this book, especially knowing that they are going to star in the first actual book in the series. Tamera Alexander has crafted the perfect opening to what is sure to be a winning and popular series, if this book is anything to go by.

"Christmas at Carnton" is a wonderful novella, and is the perfect book to put you in the Christmas spirit. I highly recommend it and award it 4 out of 5 stars.
