Riveting: "Imperfect Justice" by Cara Putman
about the book...
To the world it seems obvious: Kaylene Adams killed her daughter and then was shot by police. Attorney Emilie Wesley knows a different story: Kaylene would never hurt anyone and was looking for a way out of a controlling, abusive relationship. Her death shakes Emilie’s belief that she can make a difference for women in violent marriages. Self-doubt plagues her as she struggles to continue her work in the wake of the tragedy.
Reid Billings thought he knew his sister—right up until he learned how she died. He discovers a letter from Kaylene begging him to fight for custody of her daughters if anything should happen to her. No attorney in her right mind would support an uncle instead of the father in a custody case, but Kaylene’s letter claims Emilie Wesley will help him.
Thrown together in a race to save Kaylene’s surviving daughter, Emily and Reid pursue the constantly evasive truth. If they can hang on to hope together, can they save a young girl—and find a future for themselves in the process?
my review...
Suspense, top-notch drama, and a plot that will keep you riveted to the pages converge to make "Imperfect Justice" a fantastic second instalment in the "Hidden Justice" series! As someone who has myself worked with victims of domestic violence, I can tell you that this novel perfectly captures the angst professionals feel in trying to help those in such situations, as family members are torn between leaving and staying, often faced with impossible choices. Putman has crafted together such a realistic, heart-rendering scenario that I found myself wishing I could step into these pages so I could walk along side the characters and work for justice as Emily does.
One of my favourite categories of novels to read is those in the suspense genre, and I can tell you that Putman has succeeded at infusing suspense into "Imperfect Justice" in every way. The novel crackles with tension on several fronts, as Emily fights to uncover the truth of the death of Kaylene Adams, while also facing a nameless stalker who seems to be getting more bold with each turn of the page. Add in a growing romance between Emily and Reid, and I know that Putman is definitely going to please fans on many fronts!
Those readers who enjoy romantic suspense starring likeable characters who fight for justice are going to want to add this novel to their "must read" list. I award this book a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars, and look forward to the third novel in the series, due to be released in September 2018.
