Another fun Melanie Dickerson novel: The Orphan's Wish (Hagenheim #8)

The eighth novel in the Hagenheim series finds Melanie Dickerson giving her special twist on the beloved story of Aladdin (and Abu)! Set in the 1400's, orphan Aladdin has been rescued from a life of thievery by a kind priest and transported to the city of Hagenheim. There, he becomes the unlikeliest of friends with Kirstyn, the daughter of Duke Wilhelm and Lady Rose of Hagenheim. Aladdin believes he must earn his fortune to make himself worthy of Kirstyn's hand, and so leaves Hagenheim to do so. But, his decision leads to events with unforeseen consequences for them both, where Kirstyn's very life becomes endangered.

"The Orphan's Wish" is a novel filled with drama, romance, and suspense as the story of Aladdin and Kirstyn plays out on its pages. Some readers may not feel that this novel follows the story of Aladdin closely enough, but I quite enjoyed this medieval take on the story, with Dickerson's own special flavour. I particularly liked how faith in Christ has been woven into the book, adding a new element to Aladdin's story that makes it all the more richer as a result. The romance that grows over the course of the story is one that is appropriate for all ages, and my teen daughter in particular greatly enjoyed reading about these characters. Readers will be able to resonate with some of these character's struggles, such as feelings of not being worthy enough, something that we can all relate to, and will walk away with a new appreciation for the need to look to God to carry us through our own challenging times. The plots zings along and my daughter especially found it difficult to tear herself away from the story line until she'd found out how things turned out in the satisfying conclusion.
Will we get a ninth book in the series? I have no doubt that Dickerson's fans will be hoping so! I (and my daughter) award this book a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
