about the book....

If Betraying Her Heart Means Saving Countless Lives, Will She Find the Courage?

Willa Forsythe is both a violin prodigy and top-notch thief, which makes her the perfect choice for a critical task at the outset of World War I--to secure a crucial cypher key from a famous violinist currently in Wales.

Lukas De Wilde has enjoyed the life of fame he's won--until now, when being recognized nearly gets him killed. Everyone wants the key to his father's work as a cryptologist. And Lukas fears that his mother and sister, who have vanished in the wake of the German invasion of Belgium, will pay the price. The only distraction he finds from his worry is in meeting the intriguing and talented Willa Forsythe.

But danger presses in from every side, and Willa knows what Lukas doesn't--that she must betray him and find that key, or her own family could pay the same price his surely has.

my review....

The second novel in the "Shadows Over England" series was every bit as good as the first novel in the series, and I devoured it in short order! I absolutely loved the musical theme that weaves its way through the novel, including Willa's amazing ability to hear a song and then recreate it beautifully and with near perfection on her violin. What a gift that would be to have the capacity to do that! I enjoyed the delicate dance that occurs between Willa and Lukas regarding their relationship, where Lukas is unaware that he is Willa's mark in her quest to get the key to his father's work, and Willa is drawn to Lukas against her own will. I quite enjoyed the humour and lighthearted moments that take place between them, with clever bits of dialogue moving things forward. The love that grows between the two is the kind that is tested in the fire, and one that speaks to the kind of love that God offers us, one that is full of unexpected grace.

As a reader who loves mystery and suspense, I can tell you that this book is filled with the best kind of intrigue, with the tension building nicely over the course of the story. By the time they launched the rescue mission, my fingers could not be pried from the pages as I raced to find out how things would resolve. And perhaps my favourite part of the story is when Willa meets Christ, as it is simply beautiful to behold and points readers to the gospel in a natural and wonderful way.

Fans of novels that take place in World War I in Europe are going to love the unique historical novel that Roseanna M. White has crafted. I give this book a very solid rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.
