An emotional tale: "Daughters of Northern Shores" by Joanne Bischof

Returning readers to rural nineteenth-century Appalachia to reunite with Aven and Thor, as well as to the icy waters of the North Atlantic where Haakon has fled, Joanne Bischof expertly continues the tale begun with "Sons of Blackbird Mountain". Aven is now carrying Thor's child and celebrating the many blessings God has given them including Aven's marriage to the strong and capable Thor. But when a decades-old feud with those on a neighbouring farm is reignited, it is Haakon, returning after 4 years away, who holds the key to finding a way forward.

The second novel in the Blackbird Mountain series offers up another moving novel from Bischof's talented pen, crossing the oceans to explore themes of love and forgiveness and grace. Haakon's choice in the prior novel were truly heart-breaking, revealing the depths of the human heart which so often lead us astray. But seeing his transformation that has occurred since he fled was inspiring to read about. As with her prior novel, the author does a wonderful job at crafting characters that you will care about and find yourself rooting for. Indeed, as she tackles this story of good versus evil, readers will be caught up in the emotional tale laid out before them, reconnecting in a new way with the characters from the prior novel while growing to enjoy the new intriguing characters in this tale as well. Although I found this novel to be at a somewhat a slower pace than the prior novel, there is much to celebrate in this well-told tale that will certainly satisfy Bischof's fans.

I strongly recommend this second instalment of the Blackbird Mountain series. Wonderful characters and vivid, compelling storytelling combine to make for another satisfying read. 4 out of 5 stars.
