Remarkable! "River to Redemption" by Ann H. Gabhart
about the book....
One young woman must stand up for freedom--and perhaps find her own in the process.
Orphaned in the cholera epidemic of 1833, Adria Starr was cared for by a slave named Louis, a man who passed up the opportunity to escape his bondage and instead tended to the sick and buried the dead. A man who, twelve years later, is being sold by his owners despite his heroic actions.
Now nineteen, Adria has never forgotten what Louis did for her. She's determined to find a way to buy Louis's freedom. But in 1840s Kentucky, she'll need all of the courage and strength she possesses--and more.

my review....
Based on a true story, Ann H. Gabhart's latest novel will sweep you back in time with a dramatic plot that is so remarkable that it is hard to believe it is based on actual events! If you are anything like me, the events of "River to Redemption" will find you battling tears one minute and then have you smiling from ear to ear the next. Adria's journey of how she loses her family to cholera and is saved by two slaves is inspiring to say the least, and provides the perfect backdrop for her later passion to see slavery in her community (and her country) come to an end. Although her story may not be contemporary, the issues of equality continue to ring true for all of us, no matter what part of the world we live in.
I absolutely loved the character of Louis, a slave who truly emulates the love of God in all that he does. His decision to not flee the community during the cholera outbreak when obtaining freedom would have been possible, solely because he believes that God has called him to stay, reveals the kind of obedience to God's will that we can all only hope to aspire to. I was deeply moved by the efforts of the community coming together to try to buy Louis' freedom. Add in some humerous moments as Adria is pursued by not just one but two young men, along with an unexpected romance between Adria's caregiver and the new preacher in town, and you have a story that is going to definitely appeal to Gabhart's loyal fans who have been eager to see what she was going to offer up next. The result is a story that will warm your heart and remind you that God can bring good from the most desperate of circumstances.
"River to Redemption" will hold you in its grip from start to finish, with a cast of characters that you are going to love, and an ending that will leave you longing for more. I award this novel a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
