About the Book

Sadie Wagner has always been devoted to her family. So when her stepfather is injured and can't work, she decides to leave home and accept a position as a clerk at the mercantile in Goldtree, Kansas. Goldtree also offers the opportunity to use her God-given singing talent--though the promised opera house is far different from what she imagined. With her family needing every cent she can provide, Sadie will do anything to keep her job.

McKane comes to Goldtree at the request of the town council. The town has been plagued by bootlegging operations, and Thad believes he can find the culprit.

After he earns enough money doing sheriff work, he wants to use it to pay for his training to become a minister.

Thad is immediately attracted to the beautiful singer who performs in Asa Baxter's unusual opera house, but when he hears her practicing bawdy tunes, he begins to wonder if she's far less innocent than she seems. And when Sadie appears to be part of the very crimes he's come to investigate, is there any hope the love blossoming between them will survive?

MY REVIEW

Kim Vogel Sawyer writes books of the heart, filled with characters that soon feel like friends. Sadie Wagner is one such character, one whose devotion to her family and her innocence make her utterly likeable and one you will be cheering on as she grows and develops. The zany mercantile sisters, Melva and Shelva, are equally fun to meet, providing many moments of hilarity.  Unfortunately, I found that Sadie's cousin, Sid, and his unwanted attention towards Sadie made up a character who annoyed me at every turn. Because of his ongoing childish behaviour, I found myself wanting to skip over scenes including Sid (of which there are many) and as such my enjoyment of the story suffered. I did enjoy, however, the drama that unfolded with the rest of the plot elements such as the illegal distribution of liquor, blackmail, and the pressure Sadie faces to compromise her morals.

I mostly appreciated that, as with Sawyer's other novels, Song of My Heart glorifies God, bringing to life the beauty of faith and the difference such faith makes in every part of our days and in our deepest being. The novel explores important themes of sacrifice for our families, trusting God and following God's leading, and using our gifts to glorify Him...and not ourselves.

I have no doubt that readers who have enjoyed past works by Sawyer will find themselves at home meeting Sadie and Thad and following their journey. For myself, I can't say I enjoyed this novel as much as I have some previous ones, such as In Every Heartbeat. I mildly recommend this book and give it 3 out of 5 stars.
