Riveting read: "My Daughter's Legacy" by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould
about the book....
Virginia, 1864
Therese Jennings cannot abide the thought of owning slaves. When her widowed mother inherits a plantation, Therese flees to Civil War Richmond, where she works as a governess by day and tends to wounded soldiers at night. But when trouble befalls her family, can she reconcile her obligations with her beliefs? And will love—whether with an old beau or a handsome new suitor—ever fit in her broken world?
Nicole Talbot’s life is back on track after years of substance abuse. Home from college for the summer, she’s finally ready to share a shocking secret, one that raises new questions about a traumatic childhood experience. But when facts she uncovers cast doubt on her family’s legacy, she must risk all that she’s gained—her fresh start, her family’s trust, and her growing relationship with a new man—to unlock the secrets of the past.
my review....
Clark and Gould are a dynamic writing team, and "My Daughter's Legacy" proves their skill in penning a book that is impossible to put down! I had been eager to get my hands on this third book in the series, and my anticipation was well rewarded as this novel expertly blends the contemporary and historical story lines into one riveting read. Both Therese, living in 1864, and Nicole, living in the present, have fascinating lives with much to admire and also to sympathize about in each of their situations. I liked the interesting twist of Therese being an abolitionist who grew up in the south and yet definitely didn't agree with slavery, and the difficulties this placed her in. And I greatly enjoyed being able to focus in on and join Nicole as she continues her journey to sobriety and the challenges that result as she carves out a new path. Both Therese and Nicole find love along the way, but readers will enjoy the bit of suspense even in their relationships as these women need to learn who they are and what their heart is actually telling them. Male readers will be pleased to know there is nothing too mushy here, but rather that this novel displays what real love looks like. And, as with the first two books in the series, the authors have woven in some deeper themes of forgiveness and freedom, ones that will both move and inspire you as you come to the end of the novel. Therese and Nicole's giving spirits and their determination provide much to emulate for the readers who take the time to savour their story.
I absolutely enjoyed this third novel of the "Cousins of the Dove" series, and am confident other readers will too! History and contemporary elements, romance and mystery, all combine to make a satisfying, well-written book. If you haven't yet given this series a try, then you have been missing out. Grab all three of the books and I guarantee you will be glad you did. I award "My Daughter's Legacy" a high rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
