about the book...
Landyn longs for home, but her mother may have other plans....
Audrey Whitman’s dreams are coming true. Now that their five kids are grown, she and her husband, Grant, are turning their beloved family home into a cozy bed and breakfast just a mile outside of Langhorne, Missouri.
Opening weekend makes Audrey anxious, with family and friends coming from all over to help celebrate the occasion. But when Audrey’s daughter, Landyn, arrives, the U-Haul she’s pulling makes it clear she’s not just here for a few days. Audrey immediately has questions. What happened in New York that sent Landyn running home? Where was Landyn’s husband, Chase? And what else was her daughter not telling her? One thing was for sure, the Chicory Inn was off to a rocky start. Can Audrey still realize her dream and at the same time provide the comfort of home her daughter so desperately needs?
my review...
"Home to Chicory Lane" is a heartwarming tale that celebrates the gift of family and the joy to be found in the midst of reconciliation and forgiveness. Raney introduces a cast of new characters in this first book in the "Chicory Inn" series, and I particularly enjoyed getting to know Audrey and Grant, as Grant especially lays down his own desires to champion Audrey's dreams. I found their subplot to be a really interesting one as they turned their home into a bed and breakfast, a daring venture to be sure! I think I was a bit surprised that the book focused less on their story, and more on that of Landyn and Chase as they face challenges in their marriage. Couples who married young like these two did will certainly be able to relate with some of the rather immature choices they make. But I must admit that in the first part of the book I felt a bit annoyed with these two and was tempted to hurry ahead in the story to watch them grow beyond that. But as the book continued and some new twists were added to the story, each of their hearts was revealed and I grew fond of them as well.
Deborah Raney excels at bringing her characters to life, and though this book is a bit more character-driven than I usually choose, I found myself enjoying the book overall. I closed the final pages reflecting on the grace of God in giving us our family members to stand beside us through thick and thin. If there were more families out there who loved each other like this family does, the world would be a different place indeed!
I award this book a solid rating of 3 out of 5 stars, and encourage those who enjoy character-driven novels to grab a copy for themselves!
