about the book....

Miss Harriet Peabody dreams of the day she can open up a shop selling refashioned gowns to independent working women like herself. Unfortunately, when an errand for her millinery shop job goes sadly awry due to a difficult customer, she finds herself out of an income.

Mr. Oliver Addleshaw is on the verge of his biggest business deal yet when he learns his potential partner prefers to deal with men who are settled down and wed. When Oliver witnesses his ex not-quite-fiance cause the hapless Harriet to lose her job, he tries to make it up to her by enlisting her help in making a good impression on his business partner.

Harriet quickly finds her love of fashion can't make her fashionable. She'll never truly fit into Oliver's world, but just as she's ready to call off the fake relationship, fancy dinners, and elegant balls, a threat from her past forces both Oliver and Harriet to discover that love can come in the most surprising packages.

my review....

If you are anything like me, sometimes you just need a light-hearted novel that will lift your spirits with laughter. And if that's what you are looking for, then "After a Fashion" is for you! The first couple of chapters had me laughing out loud as Turano's delightful descriptions left me picturing Harriet in her ridiculous hat, bodily throwing a genteel woman into a carriage. Scene after scene found a smile on my face as I became acquainted with not only Harriet, but her quirky friends - and of course the handsome-and-eligible-but-sometimes-surly Oliver Addleshaw. Turano excels at bringing her characters to life in a truly unique fashion, and I have no doubt that readers are going to greatly enjoy getting to know them! Did the ending tie things up a little too neatly? Perhaps. Was some of the plot a tad outlandish? Maybe. But this book is just plain enjoyable from start to finish, with the fun plot balanced by an exploration of some deeper spiritual themes along the way, such as the consequences of living out mistruths or giving in to greed. I admire that Turano can write a romantic comedy that still points to the truth of Jesus - including a very moving and believable scene where one of the characters gives his life to Christ for the first time.

Witty dialogue, likeable characters, and laugh-out-loud moments are going to make "After a Fashion" a new favourite of Jen Turano's fans. And if you've never yet given this author a try, well, what are you waiting for? Perhaps a few hours with Harriet are just what you need!

4 out of 5 stars.
