Characters like you've never seen before! "Behind the Scenes" by Jen Turano
about the book....
After spending the last six years banished to the wallflower section of the ballroom, Miss Permilia Griswold has finally figured out a way to pass the time at all the New York high-society events she attends. Under the pseudonym "Miss Quill," she is the author of society gossip columns filled with tidbits only an insider in society--albeit one on the fringes--would know.
When she overhears a threat against Mr. Asher Rutherford, the owner of one of the most up-and-coming department stores in the city, she's determined to warn him. But the irritatingly handsome man doesn't believe her, leaving her no choice but to take matters into her own hands. What she doesn't anticipate is that she'll end up putting herself at risk in the process--or that she and Mr. Rutherford, a man with secrets of his own, just might end up joining forces after all.
my review....
With plenty of romance and many humorous and lively moments, "Behind the Scenes" kicks off a new historical fiction series from fan favourite Jen Turano. These characters are unlike any you've encountered before, and it is clear that Turano has greatly enjoyed thinking outside of the box especially in terms of her creation of Permilia. I didn't even know that there was such a thing as a "wallflower" in New Yorks high-society, someone who hung around the fringes at the society events and wasn't really expected to participate in things like dancing. In this role, Permilia has a totally unique take on society events, and I loved seeing this world through her eyes. And may I say that when Permilia does break out her dancing skills, I couldn't help but smile as I am quite certain I share her out-of-control, ungraceful dancing moves! As the story progressed, I appreciated Permilia and Asher's friendship all the more, especially as he encourages her to be who God has created her to be and not to try to conform to society's expectations of who she should be.
Unfortunately, I do have to admit that this novel bogged down a bit more than I usually find this author's novels to do. In fact, the first third of the story is recounting one single evening, and while there were moments of action and drama in these chapters, I felt like there was just too much dialogue that slowed down the plot too much for me to get into the the story like I usually do with a Turano novel. Normally I can't walk away from one of her novels, but I found this book too easy to take breaks from. However, the last few chapters tied the plot together nicely and readers will be glad to know that this story has the happy ending that we all hope for when we pick up a book!
Fans of Turano's novels will appreciate the light-hearted and humorous moments of this novel, as well as the great characters starring the story, both the main characters and the cast of supporting zany ones too. I award this book a rating of 3 out of 5 stars.
