about the book....

Shackled by Her Past, One Woman Searches for Healing, Forgiveness, and Love

Hope Flanagan survived the massacre at the Whitman Mission, but at terrible personal cost. Safe now in Oregon City, the gentle rhythm of tending her family's flock of sheep is slowly healing her mind and soul, but her precarious new peace is shattered when Hope is asked to testify against the Cayuse responsible for the massacre. She's not sure she can bear to relive the events of those horrific days, but neither can she risk her attackers being released if she doesn't tell her story.

As Hope struggles to make her choice, an Army lieutenant named Lance Kenner becomes an unexpected ray of light in her life. Perhaps she is still capable of love after all. But will Lance still want her if he learns the whole truth of what happened to her at the mission? Or are the secrets that lie in his own past more troubling?

my review....

The second book in the "Heart of the Frontier" series is a well-written, moving continuation of the excellent tale Tracie Peterson began in the first book of the series, "Treasured Grace". If you haven't yet read that first novel, I definitely recommend starting there, as the massacre at the Whitman Mission that takes place in the first book deeply affects the lives of these three sisters, Grace, Hope and Mercy.

In "Beloved Hope", readers are able to reconnect with all three of the sisters in this book, though it is Hope's life that is primarily focused on. I admire how Peterson has handled the tragedy of their past, as she has allowed some time to pass between the first and second book in the series, and readers will never feel mired down in grief with the sisters as they strive to move on with their lives. Rather, they will be able to resonate with Hope's anger and fear and her struggles with her relationship with God, while being held in the grip of a novel that moves along at a good pace. Suffering affects each of us in different ways, and I can't imagine not only living through what Hope did but having to find the strength to move on! The novel has some powerful scenes throughout the book, as Hope is able to confront her past and find healing, while exploring whether she is capable of loving again. Lance is a great character in his own right, and the relationship between Hope and Lance unfolds in a very natural and often tender manner, with just the right touch of romance to please a wide variety of readers. Lance's own history where he struggles to forgive someone who harmed his own family also makes for an absorbing story line.

Dramatic historical events combined with compelling characters and profound spiritual truths make for a wonderful second book in what so far has been a great series! I am truly looking forward to the
third and final novel, "Cherished Mercy", soon to arrive in September 2017, as some of the moments we spend with Mercy in this book have made me curious about what lies in her future. As for this novel starring Hope, I award it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
